I wouldn't either. I say buy a salvaged control arm and replace the bushings if it needs it, then swap it and sell your old one to someone else to refurbish. That cuts your down time. The bushings can be pushed in and out with a big vise like this one but it takes a long cheater bar on the handle:



I did a small write-up somewhere on replacing them.

So you would use aftermarket bushings, but not aftermarket arms. Interesting.

I think I fairly well represented the fact that low mileage, good quality used arms are available. That does not make them "Mile'd out" Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Yours is not incorrect, but I feel its unfair to condone used parts so quickly. With that thinking, every car should be sent straight to the crusher because "no one knows the condition" of the parts.

Not to change the subject--but while i have you on the "phone" Cougar--do you know which body mounts work for which years--I need to replace mine (1999 4runner, 5Spd, 4x4) and there are alot of Cash for Clunkers in the Local Junkyard.

Now back to it--coug is right--used parts doesnt mean they are crap---However, considering you can get new OEM LCA's for so cheap WITH new ball joints--thats fargin sweet deal.

In a pinch I wouldnt mind used parts....

Heh I've needed new LCA busings and ball joints for nearly 3 years now. Before I lifted my truck, I had no issues. As soon as I lifted and put larger tires on it, I started having really bad issues.

I talked with a guy who had just done the new control arm bushings, and said it was a royal PIA. Basically don't do it yourself, and the guys at the shop will probably charge quite a bit because they are such a bitch to replace.

Basically what I have gathered online and from people, its a lot easier to buy used LCA's with decent mileage than deal with the bushings themselves.

OIC...well, proven wrong.

The Mitchell catalog I have doesn't show the ball joint as part of the arm.

If that price is indeed with the lower ball joint, that is a screaming deal!

Well...............you knew it would come down to $$$$$$$$$$$ in the end.
The LCA complete were just too much money with shipping so I went with the
LCA bushing set from toyotapartssales.com.
Saved about 35.00 over the stealer price.
Still ridiculous at 40 bucks each!!!

So .......a big vice, some plumbing fittings and some busted knuckles are in my future.......
Luckily , I have a second vehicle and I'll only do one side at a time.

Hey dude,
thanks for posting the bushing pics.
I've got mine in hand and I'm over at HD wondering what size plumbing caps to pic up.
I had the 2 " in my hand BUT my bushing head will not fit inside a 2" cap fitting.
I see a 2 stamped on the side of yours.
I have Toyota bushings.

It almost seems like I need something larger than 2 "
Is your runner a 99 ?

IIRC I used a grinder bit and a die grinder to slightly enlarge the opening. I have a 93 pickup.

Anyone know a shop in the Phoenix area that will press out and in the New
bushings?
