Its considered an assesory which is covered for one year. F#$%ed but that the way it is.
a marginal few stealerships would cover it under a warrenty which I don't see why all the dealerships won't since the stealership charges all warrenty work back to toyota just lazy bastarts I guess

red,

i cant understand why anyone including the dealership, would classify it as an accessory. when i think of accessories, i think of things like roof racks, tow hitch...things like that.

this is an integral part of your vehicle that, without it, won't run!

anyways, sounds like a lot of you guys are getting jacked.

why would the vehicle not run if it didn't have a fuel gauge? No were does it say u have to have it. Don’t mean to be a jerk or side with the dealer but that their take on it. An accessory is anything that does not contribute directly the drive train and a fuel gauge doesn't. Now under the perimum warrenty it should be covered but if the stealer is that much of a arse about it he won't touch it

Question Fuel Gauge Funnies.

Hi fellas, I hop in the Taco today and notice that the fuel gauge was acting funny. I started the truck up and it did not start to climb towards the Full mark as usual. It just stayted at the Empty mark for a bit. As I started driving it started to climp but in a funny way, it was jumping up and down instead of a smoth progression. Apparently I'm not the first to have this problem. I was just wondering if any of you had a copy of the TSB that metionnes this problem. Also, does the Tacoma suffer from the same issue? Also, when you turn the key off, does your fuel gauge go to Empty or stay where it last was?
Cheers,
Pierre

I get such low milage in the 4Runner that even though the light comes on at ~5 gallons left I still need to find gas pretty quick in order to not run dry. I am lucky to get 250 miles out of a tank. Freeway driving kills me because of the speed (75-80mph) and city driving is always bad for milage. I typically get anywhere between 11-15mpg. I might get a bit more than that though since my speedo isn't exactly correct. I think it is off by as much as 10% based on the speedo checks on I-5 in WA and OR. I too can squeeze anpother few gallons in by toppoing off so who knows really what range I have?

Specs FWIW: 3.4L/Auto/TRD SC/285's/4.88's

I would like to get the gauge fixed (if it was free) but it's really no biggie IMO...

I just filled up today and the gas light was on and the needle was about in the middle of the E line. I was only able to put 13.485 gallons. That is after I topped it off once the pump shut off. Thats means that I have about 5 gallons of gas lift, yet my gas gauge tells me that I'm empty. I call Toyota about this and they told me that my VIN didn't qualify for the recall.

I'm confused with this truck. I would like to get as many miles as I can out of a tank of gas, due to the fact that I drive 120-170 miles a day for work.

man- w/33" M/t's I'm getting about 18 hwy and about 15-16 in town. I shoot for about 230 on the ol' trip od, regardless of the fuel light (which I feel comes on early in MY truck) My gas gauge stops at a bit under a 1/2 tank...and holds!

I like to accelerate so that's hurts my overall driving a bit and I have the 265/75s and I see 15.5-17.0 and even when I think my guage is getting near empty I usually only can squeeze in 15 gallons into my "empty" tank.

My 99 4runner has the same problem. The fuel gauge dropped to 3/4 after only driving 10 miles. brought it in to the dealer they claimed they fixed but not much changed I was able to go 20 miles before the gauge dropped to 3/4. That was the most screwball Toyota gas gauge I ever owned.

Thank godness for my Taco. I can get over 100 miles before the gauge drop to 3/4 makes much more sense.

I also remember sometimes my gauge would sit on 1/2 a tank for what seems like a long time (maybe 75-100 miles) then all of a sudden just drop to E. Made no sense???
