99 4Runner Shaking!!

I have a 99 4runner SR5 with almost 170,000 miles. Last week I started it back up after getting groceries and it was shaking. I drove home and every time I accelerated it would shake, but when I let off the gas it wouldn't shake until I almost stopped and it would start shaking again. Very tough to explain. However, every time I get up to drive it to work in the morning it runs perfectly fine. It seems to only happen when it is relatively warm and I try to run it. I have read people talking about it being the U-Joints, but I don't understand why it would be doing this at a standstill if it were U-Joints. Could it be as simple as a clogged fuel filter? I am really puzzled on this one. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I have no engine light on or anything like that.

Thanks!!

So I threw a CEL yesterday and got it checked out. The code said "Cylinder 4 Misfire". Should I start with plugs and wires? It's been a while since I changed them out.

Do you have a multimeter? Check the wire resistance first. Odds are your plugs or wires are the cause. I just went through this myself.

That's a good place to start. You can also try swapping the coil pack to other cylinders and see if the code changes (suggesting problem with the coil). I'd start by replacing the spark plugs if you havn't done it in a long time. That's a cheap fix anyway.

I had the same problem with my 99 Sr5. It would shake at about 45-50 mph and when I was completely stalled. After taking it to several places for their "best guess" I finally had the injector replaced and that fixed it immediately.

I was about ready to say "check your motor mounts", then you threw a code.
Sounds like you already have good intel. Good luck.
