99 4Runner fuel gauge

My grandson has a 99 4Runner with a fuel gauge issue.Sometimes the gauge will go way past full, sometimes just to full. Drops to 1/2 only. 1/2 is not empty, maybe 1/4. Started as intermittent. JT3GM84R2X0050939. I understand there was a tsb about this, b ut I can't find it. It was something about replacing a circuit board in the cluster. We put a new sender in the tank-no change.

Talk to the dealer, it should have been a recall for known defective parts, they added a inclinometer to make the fuel level more accurate ironically, later deemed defective and you get to buy the replacement part out of pocket, they also have a upgraded sending unit, i had them do both according to the recall, what a piss off!. Could try a calibration, but usually its the chip in the dash..

I'll check, but I haven't seen anything about a rec all. Just a tsb about replacing a circuit board in the cluster.

Sorry, I should have said TSB that should have been legally deemed a Recall due to known defective parts that could leave someone stranded, or experience a loss of power brakes and power steering at high speeds due to running out of fuel unexpectedly because of said known documented defective parts ANY Toyota dealer will be able to pull up your VIN and determine if it was done and whether you need to do the chip in the cluster, or just the sending unit, sounds like you need to talk to the dealer to get the chip in the cluster anyways.

I'll have my grandson check with the dealer. Thanks for the information, friend.
