'98 Taco Brake Booster Clearance Issues

So i just put a brake booster out of a '98 v6 Taco into my '85 4runner... everything was fine and dandy until i turned the steering wheel. The steering linkage right up against the firewall, daignal to and below the booster, hits just enough to not allow a full turn.

here's my question: does anyone know the inner workings of that particular booster? and if so, would i be able to clearance it with a 1/2" dent or so?

i was hesitant to do it when the problem arrose, so i thought i'd post up on afew pbb's before doing it...

thanks,

-Jason

I wouldn't be pounding on a booster....they use a rubber vacuum diaphragm and you are likely to destroy it. Why did you not use a 95 4runner v6 booster?

that's exactly what thought.. not exactly the type of part you go beating on...

i was told that the 96 taco one was what i wanted... is it the 95 4runner v6 one that i want?

taco is not the right one, as you found out. You want a 2nd Gen 4runner or 89-95 V6 Truck booster. They are a dual diaphragm style booster.

Remember Tacos use a rack and pinion style setup, which means the steering column goes down through the floor, so clearance of the booster is not an issue. they had to design the 2nd gen (steering gear box style) to clear the steering shaft since it comes through the firewall.

Not too long ago I installed an early 90s v6 brake booster and MC on my 84 4Runner. It bolts up and works great, but at first the upper u-joint in the steering shaft would hit the edge of the booster. Solution? Just used a screwdriver to bend back the seam at the edge of the booster until it had just enough clearance to turn without scraping.
