Question 98 limited 2WD spring recommendations

need some advice on how to solve the rear suspension "sag" problem. just installed new bilsteins all around but I am having trouble finding a compatable 2WD spring. I would like to use performance H&R's 1" lift but I am not sure if the mounts on my rig are the same as the 4WD. can someone please provide info. thank you.

Might want to check with Nolan, I think he just finished his lift on his 2WD runner. Just PM him or do a search I'm sure u will find his post here.
His web site:

But I think the 4WD springs should fit without any issue just has more height than a 2WD version. Someone here may have a set laying around after doing there lift.

The 4WD springs will fit without any problem. I put the PP springs and Bilsteins on my 2000 SR5 2WD about a month ago. I ended up with 3" of lift in the front and 2 5/8" in the rear. Roughly. If you are only wanting 1" of lift, buy a set of stock springs off a 4WD 3rd gen. Someone probably has a set sitting around somewhere. They are 1" taller than a 2WD in stock trim. thanks for the info. a couple more questions - if I only want a 1" lift will I need to modify my standard length bilsteins? do you know if the stock 4WD toyota coils are progressive rate? thanks much.

Forgot something. If you are going to put 4WD springs in the front, the 4WD shocks are different. This is what I have been told. I put 4WD Bilsteins on mine because of this. Someone else should be able to elaborate more on this than I can. Check and see if the 2WD & 4WD Bilsteins have the same part number. I don't believe its an issue of shock length. Mine are stock length that I am running with my lift, with no problems at all. I don't believe the stock springs are progressive rate, like the PP springs are. Check on the front springs issue then you should be ok.

Jan,

Perfect timing. I just took off my stock 4WD springs off my 98. They were removed this weekend to put in PP 1" springs. They had 69K miles on them. If you want the entire set, $60. I work in El Monte, CA. Lemme know. Do you need 99 Highlander (black)running boards too? I got that for sale too at $100. And I also have rear Weatherflectors for $20. Clean my garage out of all this and I'll make you a deal.

What years are 3rd gen? Could I swap out just the rear springs in my Taco for 4x4's and leave the front stock? Is the rate stiffer on the 4x4's?

3rd gen 4Runner refers to 96-2002 4Runners. I know for a fact that on the 96-2000 4Runners the stock springs on a 4WD were 1" taller than the stock 2WD springs. I think they changed some suspension things up from 2001-2002. I don't know about the rates being different. I think they are and that might account for them being taller too.

I don't know how much of this applies to Tacos either. I have no experience with those. If I'm not mistaken Tacos have leaf springs in the rear where as 4Runners have coils.

re: suspension

i have a question. what if i only change the rear springs on a 2wd to the 4wd will it be that much higher in the rear? the reason i need more of an agressive spring in the rear is that im planning on putting a sub box back there. would the stock 4wd sping make the truck alot higher in the rear compared to the stock 2wd spring? anyone got a site where i could purchase just rear springs so when i add in the box i will have a comfortable ride still and be able to handle the load. the stock 2wd springs are too soft even with my bilsteins.

Ah, I didn't know 4Runners used coils. So a 96 4x4 Tacos leafs aren't necessarily 1" taller than mine. Something every day

As far as I know the 4WD springs would make your 4Runner 1" taller in the rear. Start a new thread about this if you want to because there are some 2WD folks out there that are running 4WD springs in some form or another.
How much is this sub box going to weigh?
Also, ask around because there is bound to be someone with a set of used 4WD springs laying around.

Yep, if 4Runners did they would be a little cheaper and easier to lift.

Im going nuking futs trying to find a way to fix the rear sag of my 4runner. I got a REvtek lift and need to gain about a inch or so in the rear. People say to go to the dealer, but I dont want to pay the price for the coil from toyota. Anyone know of aftermarket companies that do rear coils only, not all four

Not sure what the dealers goign to do for you to give you 1" more lift, maybe I'm confused.
Mike of Xtreme Offroad he is a memeber here sells just the rear OME stuff and also Wheelers Offroad. I got the OME 891 since I do a little towing now and then.
