98 4Runner wouldn't start...

no click. no turn over. nothing.

After tinkering with it (moving it into different gears to start it), it started up. So far I cannot duplicate the problem. Happened twice so far and I only started being concerned after the 2nd time which resulted in a tow.

It's a SR5 V6 w/MT and 208K on it.

Aside from the simple (which is only simple when you actually have gotten to the starter) starter test that everyone posts to do first, I'm led to believe that if I don't hear any click, it's not usually starter problem.

Since I have a lifetime warranty on the starter, I don't need to worry about changing out just the contacts, as I can just swap in a new one.

I've checked the starter relay and it reads (tested continuity) fine.

My mechanic friend said to check the Clutch switch (not clutch cancel switch) behind the clutch pedal.

I've also read something about the ignition switch going bad...possible?

Any thoughts, before I try to go at removing the starter?

Non-OEM starter? How many miles on it?
How old is the battery?

How often does it happen? (You mention 2 times...as in the past day, week, month, year..?)

Yeah, non-OEM. Replaced in May 2006. I would estimate probably 60+K on it since it was installed.

Battery was replaced earlier this year around April. I did check the battery voltage and it was within specs.

The non-starting happened 2x since Thanksgiving. It has started OK the past few days.

I have read a similar thread with the similar problem here. Turns out the problem was coming from the non OEM starter.
