98 4Runner Speedometer/Odometer input adjustment

So I've been running larger tires (~33) and haven't minded the lower speedometer and odometer reading. But I'm regearing to 5.29s and my odometer will soon be clocking more distance than I'm actually driving. Not good for taking value off the vehicle... or for counting those logging road kms to the spur you need.

So how do I fix the input to the speedo and odo?

I've searched and read about a dozen threads that contain fairly useless information telling you to ignore it, or buy a GPS. I'm not interested in those kind of replies.

I want to do it RIGHT for the odo reading and for ease of reading while driving. The math is dead easy. ALL I want to know is how to go about the adjustment or part replacement if that be the case. I don't really want a hokey aftermarket fix, either...

My 98 cluster has a mechanical barrel odometer, if that is relevant (I think 99+ have a digital lcd display and might be different).

Thanks for your replies!

I used one of these on my 01 4Runner, works great.

I think you'll find even though you have a mechanical odometer the sending unit in the trans is electronic so it should work.

How does the factory or dealer adjust them? There must be a way given the number of gear/tire combos offered stock and the fact that these things sometimes need to be tweaked anyway.

The dealers don't adjust them. The ecu is set from the factory for the axle and tire size. It basically converts the pulsed signal from the speed sensor and sends it to the speedo. The Dakota Digital unit I have just reconverts the signal between the ecu and the speedo, adjustable for almost any axle ratio and tire size.

Did you use this on the electronic speed control on the side of the transmission which is a two wire. Or did you tie this into your abs to wire sensor and did you have to use both side of the ABS on the rear?
I just did a solid-axle swap and also replace the rear axle front and rear axle are both from an FJ 80 1994. I am using the ABS sensors from the Land Cruisers rear end to feed my speedometer not using front ABS at all
