Sorry, I felt I made it clear that it was an ignition based hard start, and your response to me, seemed like you were implying I didn't know jack about the problem. This engine is installed using the 100% engine management wired like it was in the the 98. I'm 99.9% sure it wasn't a swap related issue so I felt in this section where the engine belongs was the best option.

The only change to the harness was adapting the trans harness to work with the manual. The only thing engine management wise that got reused from the 3.0 is the fuel pump. The unmodified 3.4 harness plugs into the unmodified 3.0 dash harness using an adapter harness I made. Everything works like factory and the untrained eye wouldn't even know its not supposed to be there. All of the evap plugs are taped off and tucked up at the top of the firewall away from heat, dirt, and moisture. Left over trans wiring is also tapped off and tied up under the truck.

For more details on the swap you can check out the build log in my signature. It's not super in depth but most relevant information is there.

Disclaimer: You probably know way more about what is going on than I do. Don't flame me.

These types of problems are quite hard to diagnose over the internet. It would be much easier if we could see things with our own eyes, but many of us are far away.

Does the problem still seem to be temperature dependent after replacing the oxygen sensor? Coolant temperature, ambient temperature, none, or both?

What scanner are you using?

Are you able to graph the data using your scanner?

What data, if any, changes between when the engine is running fine versus problem occurs?

What we are looking for is something that changes between when the engine runs fine, and when it is acting up.

Take some pictures or video of the data and post up anything you may find useful for those of us who are not right in front of your 4Runner.

Maybe you are temporarily losing a connection somewhere or a connection is being made where one should not exist.

To be honest, I really have no idea what is going on.

Just for the record:

A hard crank is when the starting system is struggling to rotate the engine fast enough to start the combustion process.

A hard start is when the starting system is working properly and rotating the engine sufficiently to start the combustion process, but some other system, like ignition, fuel, compression, or engine control systems are preventing the combustion to start like it should.

Well, the truck finally set a cam crank relation code. I don't remember the exact number it was. It only did it once. I searched around to find somebody with a scope I could borrow and check the actual readings from the cam and crank sensors but I had no success. After sleeping on it for a while, I bit the bullet and spent the $75 on a new crank sensor. So far, it's been a week after I installed it, with no power problems to speak of. It has been perfect. Sorry I burdened you all with such a tricky issue and I appreciate all the help.
