97 V6 Header Install

Hey all,

I'm in the Denver, CO area and want to install headers on my truck. I've called around a bunch of shops and can't find any to do it, even if I supply the headers!

Any advice from anyone in this area?

Otherwise, I'm going to order and do myself I guess. How big a PITA is it to get done?? I'm very handy and don't mind busting in there to do it.

Anyone who has done this, please give me some advice. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Chris

www.gadgetonline.com - he goes through the pains and trials of installing these bad boys.

There are others here on the boards who have done them on their own. Most will agree, its quite a pain. The gains are pretty good though.

The dealer wont install TRD headers? That sounds funny. Or are you talking about the Downey's or Edelbrock's?

I'm thinking NWOR, Downey, or Edelbrock. The dealer is the last place I take my 4Runner to get anything done!

Thanks for the info.

Headers

No but I just helped a friend locally do one on the same truck as mine and daaaamn! I didn't think it would take that long but maybe the 109 temp that day had something else to do with it. One big problem we all keep having with the TRD headers is constant leaking. Our service department got so sick of people coming back in after installation that we no longer offer to put them on here.

Todd

P.S. I still want some though, speed good, likey de speeeeed!

Hey Todd,

Thanks for the information. How much would the TRD headers for my truck cost?

Dude, that's an awesome price. The gasket leak has me a bit worried though.

Does that include gaskets Todd?

Todd and others have mentioned that the headers somtimes leak after install. Those things are already a pain, the last thing I would want to do is replace a gasket right after putting them on.

Just has me worried...ya know?

Headers

Yes they have been known to leak from time to time, however we have been told that it is due to improper installation. As for the kit it comes with all necessary gaskets.

I put my Edelbrocks on by myself. It took me 11 hours including a lunch break and welding the new flange on. If you decide to do it tools that you may not have are: a sawzall to cut off the stock crossover pipe, a welder (you can also take your cat to a shop to have the flange welded on), a cheater bar to loosen the manifold bolts, and patience.

If you like working on your truck I would do it, a lot of people bitch about it and say take to the dealer, it's worth paying $300-400, but I disagree it's worth knowing it was done right and if you have a day to work on your truck it's worth it.

This is an old thread, but I am really interested in installing headers on my '97 Ltd...
Have there been any new developments or new products? My searched seem to just turn up "OEM Manifolds"...
Would this job take 11 hours if I used my friend's RV repair shop? He has all the tools..welders, even exhaust pipe to custom build exhausts...which begs the question...is a dual exhaust possible under this 4Runner?

With access to all those tools I could install them in about 6hrs. My Edelbrock's are still doing ok...but for the record I wouldn't buy this brand again. The slave cyl is still rubbing on part of the collector protector plate. Eventually it will go through. I wouldn't bother with headers unless I had a SC'r and all the tuning gear.

ahh...thanks for that. sounds like this may be one reason that not too many people are doing this job. Mine is a 97, but it's still my daily driver. I have to remember headers where the first thing I did in a long string of making my old mustang "un-streetable"...
