97' Gas Gauge Issues...

I have serached...
But Nothing similar to what my issue is
Or for my year...
All I have readis for the 99' Runners...

Just recently (yesterday)
I went to fill-up and after getting back in I noticed that the gas gauge was only up to right under the full mark...
Usually I would drive a littel and then it would go past it by maybe 2 or 3 needle points...
But it remained in place...

Later after travaling 16 miles it was down just below 3/4 of a Tank!!
I was like "There is no way I am burning that much gas that quick!!"
So I stop at the pump again and try filling up...
It only took about a gallon of gas...

So I now know I am having gas gauge problems...

I was wondering...
how the sending unit works?
how much a new sending unit is?
And can I replace it myself?

This problem couldn't come at a worst time...
I have a 450 mile trip ahead of me this weekend (roughly 6 hours...)
And I now am going to have to mile count...

Man I fix one thing and another goes...
Every car I drive does this to me...
I think I am cursed...

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

Your welcome. Hope you get it figured out. BTW, I never really fixed mine, I just live with it. Thankfully it isn't too bad.

I would have done the eraser trick, but it was just too late.
