97 4runner won't start after valve cover gasket replacement
Hi everyone,
Replaced the valve cover gaskets, half moons, camshaft plugs, spark plugs, plenum gaskets, and throttle body gasket. Put everything back together and started it up. It started then began to choke then died. Now it won't start at all. I labeled all the hoses and wires and reconnected them to the correct locations but clearly I screwed something up. Any ideas?
The OBD II sensor doesn't throw any codes but reads this:
Choking and dying and not being able to restart sounds like a fuel issue. Did you unplug the injectors? Did you plug them back in? Are the spark plug wires correct? Have you checked over your fuses? Did you lunch any harnesses between layers of the intake?
Did the vehicle run tip top before the repair? Is it possible there was an underlying problem?
I didn't mess with the fuel injectors but I suppose I could make sure they're in correctly. Checked the spark plug wires, they are correct. I will check the fuses. I don't think I would have put anything inbetween the intake.
Found the problem. Had the coolant line that goes thru the throttle body connected to vacuum line that goes into the IAC. Stupid, I know.
When I started it up a lot of white smoke came out of the exhaust and it definitely smelled like coolant. I know coolant in the oil is a death sentence but what about if it just burns off? Should I do anything?
you pumped coolant into your intake. liquid doesn't compress the way vapor does. It's possible everything is okay since hopefully it was just a little bit of coolant. It's possible that you hydrolocked the motor and bent all the valves. I would take the spark plugs out and crank the motor to see if any coolant comes out of the cylinders, and if so, how much. Then if you want to get really into it, you could do a compression test. Or you could cross your fingers, put the spark plugs back in, and start it up.
That's what I was afraid of. I already started it up and drove it. Lots of white smoke for 5 mins but everything seems fine now. Any chance it mixed with oil or is the intake completely separate from any oil?

Yes and no. There isn't a direct mixing between the two chambers, but if you contaminated the cylinder walls with coolant, it IS possible that it would get dragged down by the rings and mixed into the oil. Albeit that would be a very minimal amount. I'm with @crawler85 change your oil and filter for peace of mind.
Will do oil and filter tonight. Thanks for the help guys. Close call. I feel like I could've mixed up any other two tubes and maybe threw an evap check engine code but those are crucial putting in correctly. Newbie mistake.
I did the exact same thing after cleaning my IAC. After I corrected the issue, the 4runner blew white smoke for about 10 minutes. At the time I found a thread from someone who had done the exact same thing. Several people had recommended changing the oil several times. I tried to find the old thread but no luck.
To be on the safe side I immediately changed the oil using the cheapest oil I could find at Walmart. I would change the oil, drive around the block a couple times until the oil was good and hot, and then drain it. On the first change the oil had a tint of white to it. After seeing that I decided to change it a couple more times to be on the safe side. I finished the process with a new oil filter and mobile 1. This may have been overkill, but that was 25k miles ago and 4runner still runs like a champ.
