Well I have something going on that no one can seem to get to the bottom of in my 99 Limited. Let's see if I can make a very log story short.
At the end of the day I put the Runner in the shop for what I thought was most likely a connection issue or something not connected in the 4x4 system. It's seem I might have been correct. So the issue started off when rear locker would not lock in. Then I lost the AWD mode and then the 4x4 mode when you pull the shift lever back on the Multi Mode case (So the Center diff was not locking either) and nothing was coming on in the cluster. No flashing light etc.
I took it to Toyota and thought a dealer Tech that might be a bit old school may still be around, LOL! NO! They told me a new Elocker would fix everything at the tune of 1800 for the part. I said not happening on my watch.
So off to another local shop that came recommended to me. They sent it off to a Gear and Drive-train shop locally and his thought was the case is broken or something is bad in it. Nope, all checked out good and he resealed it and put fresh fluids etc etc.
So same guy went thought the front Diff also thinking that was the issue. Same results. All good and nothing "Broken". Were all scratching out heads because after going through it all guess what now works. The AWD mode and the 4x4 Mode when you pull the shifter back on the Case now. Everything lights up on the dash as it should also. AWD and 4x4. Only thing that is still off line and not Locking is the rear E-Locker.
So I was trying to read up on this issue and not having much luck. If there is something I can read about the Locker and how to test it and Ohm it out ETc I would be grateful. Also maybe and wire diagram of this system to to check everything? The goof news about all of this is the Guys that took the job on have not bent me over the coals and honestly I felt they undercharged for there time but I"m not complaining at all.
So at this point I would like to hear some educated guesses from some of you that have been down this road. I was thinking a loose connection and it seems to be right. Would this also make the E-Locker not work? Thoughts?
They 'Im guessing unplugged stuff and plugged it back in. The case was R&Red and looked at from what I was told and the actuator was good he said and gears etc.
As for the Locker. Yes I'm on the low side while trying to engage it and it just flashed and never goes solid like when its locked up. The ABS is kicking off like it should when the E-locker is trying to work so that's a good thing. I"m probably going to have to find a bunch of Toyota nuts local and have a beer party and were going to have to just do it our self's honestly. Plug by plug end to end and test all grounds and leads etc etc. Even test all the pins in the connectors. I'm just not sure what else to try and do. I'll start at the locker and track it forward through the ECU I guess. I'm still trying to find a wire diagram of it also.
You can bench test the locker actuator by applying voltage to it. I don’t have the schematic in front of me to say which pins, but it’s in the service manual that’s stickied at the top of the forum page.
Here is the issue I had with my 4WD... Every so often I would engage the 4WD to give it a little exercise. At about 200k miles I started noticing a delayed response from the 4WD. This wasn't an issue until one day when it would not disengage. At first I thought it might be a vacuum line, but I could not find any leak. Eventually I found a thread describing a similar issue with a 4WD position sensor. The sensor is located on the back of the front differential. Oil from a leaking valve cover gasket had run down the engine and caused the position sensor to fail. I removed the sensor and gave it a good cleaning with break parts cleaner and it solved the problem. Hope this helps!
