97 4runner SR5 Acceleration Problems

My 4runner is having problems...

here are the symptoms i've diagnosed so far
1. When accellerating.. the car hesitates until about 2k RPM and then it's normal
2. On the highway about 100 kmph.. when i try to hit the gas.. the car hesitates and will not go any faster.. the car shakes as it tries to accellerate.. tested it with cruise and with over drive off... regardless.. the car shakes and hesitates when trying to push down on the throttle
3. The exhaust is making a putaputaputa sound like it's getting blocked or restricted... but then it's fine.. this is under acceleration...

it's not the tires or the rain or the transfercase or the tranny because it happens in RWD mode and AWD mode...

any suggestions would help me out.. not too safe to drive it on the highway...

i think it's either
a) misfiring/timing belt
b) needs a tune up
c) bad spark plug
d) bad air filter
e) blocked fuel injector
f) exhaust leak

i'm gonna go to partsource to see if they have an OBDII code reader to see what code it is..

it's at 291 000 Kms... and the CEL is on

what year?

yes, get the code read and google the code like so: "OBDII + <<<Code>>>"

"OBDII + PO171"

we also have a code breakdown in our tech section

or alternatively, search the code using the search feature and be prepared to read follow up questions after reading are always appreciated

Is it OK in neutral? If yes sounds like it could be a lack of fuel delivery.ie: fuel pump, fuel filter etc.

I had a VW that did the same exact thing your describing.. Not sure if its relevant here, but I changed the coil pack and it ran good as new.

i couldn't even get the code read today.. drove all over the place ( under 50 kmph ) since any hard or even medium acceleration would studder...

drove to my mechanic.. his diagnostic tool is broken and they gave him an american reader instead of a japanese one

drove to dealership.. closed for victoria day ( canadian holiday )

drove to canadian tire... their diagnostic tool is broken too

drove to part source.. they didn't have on efor me to borrow

drove to my dad's friends mechanic.. can't be done till tuesday ( holiday is on monday )

drove to honda dealership just so that they can read the code ( some sales guy trying to push honda on me when i have another honda car and gave me some spew about how "toyota" is special or some crap )

soo now.. i'm stuck with my 4runner... i can't even go over 60 kmph ( i think that's about 30mph) and i can't find anyone to diagnose it even if i paid money... i gotta wait till tuesday

looks like my truck is gonna be in the garage this weekend =*(

If you wanted to buy a reader they are on sale at Canadian Tire for less than $100 and it works on all cars 1996 or newer (the Honda guy was totally full of it). There is not much we can help you with until you have that code number, post back when you do.

found out that i was right.. the 4runner is a 98 ( it has the chrome bumpers )

anyways...

here are the codes

p0136 --- o2 sensor rear behind the cat
p0306 --- misfire #6 cyl

they switched plugs with #4 and #6 still miss fire
they switched the wires from #4 and #6 still miss fire

it's drivable aslong as i don't push it

I thought I read here that replacing the 02 sensor after the cat was a waste of time. The only one we should concentrate on is the pre-cat 02. Anyone agree/disagree and why?

Yes you are correct most of the time the precat sensor is the one that goes bad but it is possible for the sensor after the cat to go bad as a P0136 might indicate. This doesn't always mean the sensor is bad (ie you might have an exhaust leak which allows air to enter before the cat and makes the sensor look bad to the ECU). I will be important to look at what the O2 sesnor feedback looks like if you don't want to try and just replace it.

Good read for that code:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/p0136-code-question-sensor-55125/

As for the P0306 code I might also try swapping coil packs and see if that changes the location of the missfire. Often that code will be related to a wire going bad and it may be very hard to replicate by just swapping them. The coils can be tested with a multimeter and you should also install a fresh set of plugs just to be sure they are not the issue.

i got it fixed.. those guys at toyota only know what is hand given to them...

took my mechanic 10 minutes and found out what's wrong....

soo i bought OEM spark plugs while i was there and was gonna do it
soo we took all the sparkplugs out.. and we found the culprit

it was #3 spark plug.. not the 6th one that they said it was... replaced all the spark plugs and boom.. it works amazing...

while it was on the lift i was looking around ( i had an exhaust leak soo they put new gaskets in for the cat and the rear o2 sensor ) i saw oil on the inside of my rim/tire.. crap... ( i had replaced the brake piston for the drums a couple months back and i thought they blew again ) it ended up being the rear axle seal that broke and leaked oil all over the drum and the wheel.. got that fixed tooo

5 hours at the shop later.. it's healthy again! wooo
