'97 4Runner lost compression... likely cause?
There's a 4Runner on my way to work that's been sitting forever in the same spot and finally got put up for sale. The sheet says it has no compression in #4. What would you guess is the likely culprit? Rings? Valve/seat? If it's rings, can you get the oil pan off without pulling the engine? It's a '97 with 119k, 3.4L, auto, also needs exhaust. Looks pretty clean overall except for peeling clearcoat on the wheels. Asking $3500 (seems steep for something with a dead engine).

it's hard to detect that. if u're thinkin of putting in a good used engine, it's about 1k for a used engine.

expect to pay 500 for install
end of the day, prolly not worth it. unless it were 2500 or less

The ad said "no compression." I called the guy and he said it just happened abruptly while driving. I guess it just lost power, I forgot to ask if it made any noise and he didn't mention it. No one's diagnosed it, he said all the mechanics just want to replace the engine. Sounds like he'll negotiate on the price too. If I wasn't planning to move soon I'd scoop it up.

No compression means a burnt valve, bent valve, or stuck valve.
Had this in my '66 when I bought it. Course, it only cost me $100 for a head job and 5 hours of my time...

could be that he's lieing! lol. may t-belt broke, he replaced and now descovered a bent valve?
or could be blown head gasket, over heated and warped/cracked head/block. i say replace that motor.
