97 3.4l 4R overheating
Coming home from work today my CEL came on. Stopped at advanced auto to scan and came up with #3 misfire historical and current codes. Sounded right as I noticed a stutter coming off idle this morning.
Reset the code.
Left the store. Started off to my next stop and temp began rising quickly. Pulled off. Shut everything down before I got to the red. Popped the hood.
Rad cap felt warm but not hot. Coolant still in res. Upper rad hose was hot and hard.
Took care of business @ 2nd stop, maybe 20 minutes. Started the truck. Temp just below middle. Drove a few miles and started to heat up again.
No other issues over the life of the vehicle.
Does this sound like a stuck thermostat? Or should I prepare myself for more?

I pulled the t-stat and boiled it. First time to 180* no open, continued to boil then it opened. after that it would open and close at 180* like it was supposed. So that was gummed up and got replaced.
Now I'm waiting on the parts guy for antifreeze to make sure that was the only issue.

Update, refilled with coolant and now i have a fair amount of steam from the tailpipe. Replaced the #3 plug and it was damp with a mostly oil and an odor of coolant.
Hesitation went away but i still have the steam.
It looks like I have a head gasket job in my future.
