'96 Tacoma add interval wipers

I have read posts about this process for pre-Tacoma trucks and 2nd-generation-Tacomas...but nothing on the early Tacomas.

My guess is, I need a wiper switch from a '96 with tilt steering. Has anyone done this for the early Tacomas?

Thanks,

Roy

You would need a switch from a tilt equipped vehicle, these are expensive from Toyota junk yard or used online is going to be cheaper. These switches have to be pinned in to your existing combination switch connector after you unpin the old one. When I cross reference the part #84652-04060 it shows applicable from production dates of 01/1995-08/2004

Thanks Brian,

By "These switches have to be pinned in to your existing combination switch connector," you mean the new plug just plugs into the existing truck-side plug?

You think, physically, the new switch will fit onto whatever holds the switch in place and will fit under existing plastic covering?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you I've been moving. To answer your questions the combination switch connector is for the turn signals, headlights and wipers so you need to actually pull the pins or terminals out of the connector and put the new ones back in. I have some detailed instructions on this I'll post after I find them on my computer. As far as the switch fitting yes it will fit just fine.

Don't know if this helps you, but I just did this upgrade to my 99 Tacoma with non-tilt steering wheel. It didn't have intermittent wipers.

I purchased a wiper stalk from a wrecking yard from a 4runner that had intermittent wipers. Kinda pricey ($50) but the guy allowed me to plug it in and see if it worked before I paid for it. He thought I was crazy, and didn't think it would work. It worked perfect, direct swap without any re-wiring pr re-pinning.

If the entire combination switch is replaced it's plug and play if your just replacing the wiper switch it has to be repinned.

OK, thanks guys. I guess I'll start to look for a used switch.

PS,

As far as tantacoma's '99...my GF did her '07 and it was just plug-an-go. I have come to believe the first gen Tacomas need the re-pin procedure while the 2nd gen don't.
