Well, it's been over a month since I finished installing the lift kit on my truck and still dealing with vibrations after 55mph. If it's the front axles, how long do you think it will go before something breaks? I have not felt like removing them, AGAIN, to see where the problem lies, and just curious if I just drive it, what's serious problems could I face? Not even sure how I'm going to check to see if it's in face these axles, becuase I took them off once before and they were fine, according to the shop that regreased them.

 

I don't know if it's possible with the ADD (auto disconnect). Maybe even a lot of work for something so small like you said. But have you tried driving with the axles out?

I have a two wheel drive 96 4runner that has had a vibration for a couple years. I've tried balancing wheels, new rims and tires, new rear wheel bearings. At this point I'm down to new front bearings, balance drive shaft, and possibly new rear drums to solve the vibration. At this point im not in a hurry to solve it.

What type of lift? ball joint spacers? Bj spacers cab create an un-natural angle for the cv's, and could be contributing to the vibration.

 

so now I'm months out from this install and been to two different off road shops and still no where. Took it to a drive shaft shop and they found nothing wrong with the shaft. Took it to one shop and we got it up on stand and put it in gear and looked and listened for signs and found nothing. Aother shop said it was a shaft alignment issue but I doubt there measurements because I checked the angle and did not come up with the same number. Anyone know a qualified shop in Houston Area?

 

well. Had the rear main drive shaft rebuilt and balanced and still have vibrations.
Last shot is replacing the front axles. After that, she goes up for sale. Tired of working on her. Valve covers are leaking again after the second time of trying to fix the leak. She's about to roll 254K and just time to retire her to someone who wants a toy. I have other toy's and just not into this enough to justify the time and money I'm dumping in her.

Also, one last place to check is rear axle half shafts. I saw a guy who had changed his out even after they visually looked OK and it fixed his vibration problem. It's also a great opportunity to do rear wheel bearings and axle seals (seals most likely mandatory when pulling the half shafts)

 

Number one thing to check. Are you tires balanced on the proper machine?
If you dont know what im talking about, then probably not.

Read some. get tires balanced. Cant diagnose a darn thing till we know tires are good and balanced.

Report back when this is done.

And.....I just went through this exact issue. with a 3rd gen. And Im good now. New tires...and proper balancing cured a pretty annoying vibration and steering wheel shimmy.

 

Thing is, there was no vibrations before the lift kit was installed. Once installed, vibration was imediate. Rear axle half shafts??

 

Rear axle shafts are the rods inside the axle that go from the differential gears to the wheels. You usually pull them out when you do axle seals.
When you say driveshaft rebuilt, does that mean the u joints were serviced or replaced? Any play in the joints will cause vibrations.

 

Also, any play in ball joints or bushings anywhere in suspension can cause vibrations. Worn out tie rods inner and outer, and also rack bushings and rack guide are all things that can do it. I would start inspecting those all and checking for play in all suspension components. Most troubleshooting on those kinda parts can be done fairly easily DIY and/or cheaply at a shop, just gotta be specific with some mechanics sometimes

 

its probaly not the axels what your discribing is text bookl ujoints lifted trucks hafe more angel on the ujoints wich means more movement = more friction you need to lube more often im a tech for 20 yrs trust me
