96 4runner stock hitch install issues

I have a stock hitch ready for install on my 96 4runner and I just picked up all the appropriate hardware. Sadly the 4 rear bolts that are meant to fit on the welded nuts at the rear of the truck don't even really come close. I read multiple sources saying these bolts are M12x1.25x35mm. The area is clean and the threads on the nut look fine, the threads on the bolt don't even bite. Have I just got the wrong information regarding bolts size?

Did you get the correct bolts??

The size you mention should be the correct size is that what you did buy??

Wrong bolts in the correct bin??

are they two small??

How do they compare with the bolts you took out??

I can`t say for sure on yours but I just want outside and double checked on my 2000 Tacoma the welded nuts are indeed M12x1.25 length is not a issue.

Either you were given the wrong hardware or someone has changed yours for whatever reason.

Yeah those are the bolts that i bought. I had to have them ordered in from my local fastenal so I would hope they were the correct size but who knows. The bolts are too big for the nut on my frame.

There were no bolts on my frame so sadly I have nothing to compare to. Thanks for double checking with your taco though, at least i know i had the right information.

I just took another look at it and I think I may need to do a better job cleaning up the nut. Maybe pickup a tap to send through and freshen up the threads

you probably have the wrong sized bolts unless the nuts are really corroded.
I've seen tons of cases where employees cant get the pitch correct even with hardware in their hands to reference.

I just replaced these bolts recently. I would confirm the bolt size before doing anything.
I would not re-tap the hole or mess with the original threads unless you are certain you're matching the correct thread pitch.

Worse case drill all the holes out to 1/2"

I don`t suppose you have any M12x1.25 nuts to double check

It has been a few years but back then Fastenal did not carry JIS bolts maybe they got so many calls they started.

I did also buy some at the same time and they fit together so fastenal would've had to screw up both parts of the order.

They did have to have them shipped in from indianapolis so I don't think they keep a huge stock of them.

Not yet, I was planning on tackling it today, but I can't find anyone up here that sells and M12x1.25 tap. So looks like Im going to have to order one in.

Sorry for the delay, after 2 weeks they got in the tap and I cleaned up the threads. That definitely did the trick. Bolts fit in nicely after that.

Thanks for all the help

If your going to do this you should have them In M6 x1.00 M8x1.25 and M10x1.25 as well .

I have the thread repair in those sizes as well.

When you need it most times you really need it.

Glad you got it together.
