95 4 runner 4.88's rare or not
i was at the local salvage yard where you pull the parts yoursely and found that they had a 95 sr5 v6 4 runner. i ripped the rear axle apart and found out it had 4.88 gears. is this a rare thing 4 the 4 runners to have just wondering? the 4 runner was rolled real bad and the axle housing was bent so bad i had to pay them extra to torch the housing to get the one axle out. there was no engine, tranny or front suspension left. there was alot of good interior peices left and the rear doors were complete electric windows. i could go back if anybody needs stuff from it. it was in there section were you pay $10 to get in and it's all the stuff you can carry out in one trip.

i heard a lot of the 2 nd gen 4 runners had 4.56 thats why i took it apart for the centersection. i was suprised when i counted the teeth and it ad 4.88's. i'm giong to put it in my 81 4x4 that i have fixed up real nice for a daily driver. with the stock 4.10's and 32 inch tires it's kindof a dog. being only a 22r doesnot help either. hopfully i get lucky and find another one soon so i got a matched pair.

Big tire package (31's) + Auto tranny = 4.88 most of the time. I think with factory 31's and 5 speed = 4.56 most of the time. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I don't think it's all that rare BTW.

was automatic
this 4 runner i found in the salvage yard was a automatic one. the shifter was still attached to the floor they never unbolted it when thay removed the tranny in there expensive section. they keep the new stuff in a different part until they sell the engine and tranny from them then they stick it in the other section of the yard.

Should be the ratio found in 92-95 V-6 autos with stock 31's, but it may have been only 94-95, probably not 90 or 91.
Not super rare, but definitely desirable for the reason you mentioned, running it open in a DD.

4.10 was stock with 235/75r15 and 5 speed
4.30 was stock with 235/75r15 and auto
4.56 was stock with 31x10.50r15 and V6/5speed
4.88 was stock with 31x10.50r15 and v6/auto
and for every rule there are exceptions. There were 4.10 auto trucks and the small tires. I'm not sure about gear ratios with the 22re
