'91 4Runner Starter Replacement???
greetings,......does anyone know the trick to replacing the starter motor on a '91 Toyota 4 Runner?
getting the damn thing off isn't the problem,it's getting it past the transmission/firewall that is .........
looks as though the only way is to lift the engine out,or remove the manifold and header pipe, but it can't be that hard to change one out can it,or am I wrong ? thanks!

It would come out of the wheel well if your refering to a 3.0L V6.
There are a few things that need to be moved in order to gain enough clearance to remove it. Various hoses, and wire harnesses etc....
In come cases I have found using a long pry bar and prying upward on the motor mount gave me just enough room to pull the starter out when and other attempts failed. I believe this is because the motor mount was sagging.
Good luck

What engine do you have? I just put my 2.4L & trans back in on Friday. I must admit that the lower starter bolt gave me more problems than most. Does the V-6 version have the small access panel to remove in the right front wheel well?

yes it's a 3.0L V6 ,sorry, I forgot to mention this (D'OH!).:pat:.....
I've actually looked at the wheel well as an option before, but it looked impossible to me at the time,........but I will take your advice and see if it works,it beats the hell out of removing the manifold, for sure!.........thanks!

Yeah ,it's a 3.0L V6 , I don't think it has an access panel in the well, but maybe, I might have to create one!..

The other thing that helps in removing the starter is to remove the heat shield on the exhaust manifold. There is a bolt and a nut on a stud. Take the shield off and it will give you enough room to pull the starter out of the opening in the wheel well after you have removed the access panel in the wheel well.

thanks for the tip, I'll give it another try tomorrow as I did realize there was a access panel in the wheel well after all...
....I overlooked it due to all the undercoating and dirt covering it up.........
