I just got a 91 4Runner and the tach is kinda funky. It's not as bad as it sounds, but when I turn the key to the acc before I turn it over, the tach jumps to 4k. When I start it, it idles like it's at 800, but the tach is saying 4k, and it's not unusual for me to redline it and then some when I'm just cruising. It just got a new igniter so I don't thenk it's getting any weird singnals from that. I'm stumped and it's driving me crazy, any suggestions? Thanks....lj

 

So it idles at 800 but the tach says 4k? how can it say both? I am not really sure what the problem would be but it sounds very serious, especially on the 3.0, but especially any engine, shouldnt be redlined that often. Someone will chime in with a better answer. Welcome.

 

The tach doens't say both, its just that the tach is reading like 3-3.5k over what the actual revs are. That's why when I'm cruising at 3k (actual engine revs), the tach is showing like 7k....

 

has it always read off or has it started lately? has the cluster ever been apart?, I'm asking this because if its been apart its possible that the needle has been put on wrong and WELCOME to the forum

Yes,it's has always done that. I've never thought of the needle placement,or that it can even be adjusted. Is it splined? The only reason that I can think the cluster may have been pulled apart is due to shady salesmen. How hard is it to fix? Thanks........lj

 

ive never taken needles off, but i believe that they are either splined or have a interference fit, there have been a few people on this forum that have installed custom gauge faces, that would be able to answer this better than i will, good luck

 

now that ive thought about it a min you should be able to carfully work the needle off, start the engine and place the needle at about the rpm you think the engine is running

 

I've taken dozens of clusters apart, the needles all press fit. I did the white face on my F150 and it was quite a trick to get some of the needles back in the right place. Shoulda seen me driving it with the cluster half stuck in the dash, trying to match speed precisely with the car in front of me, cell phone wireless thing in my ear, steering with one hand and sticking the needle on in the right spot with the other hand, stuck through the spokes of the steering wheel... Took about 10 tries!

 

I'd check engine speed with another tach before I go to the trouble of ripping all that apart. I've had tachs on marine engines act up due to bad connections and faulty voltage regulators, but I don't know how that may relate to our Yotas.

 

Well, I pulled the cluser apart last night and it was the needle placement. I turned the ign on and set it to 0. It wasn't really that hard, just a few screws, but I broke the clear plasctic housing in the process, so if you know anyone.......
