90k mile maintenance before I buy.....

So the truck that looks to be in the right price range has 91,000 miles on it. I did some research and found out what maintenance should have been done at this point. I have heard a lot a talk about replacing the water pump at 90k. I found documentation for the timing belt but noting thus far on the pump.

I want to have the papers of what should be done, so if it has not been done, then I can talk the price down a bite more, as I will need to go have have these things done.

Thank you for your help.

typically when you do the timing belt you do the water pump as well since it's right there

Ya, makes sense. I just want documentation form a Toyota maintenance schedule so if the recommended maintenance has not been done or if the guy does not know, then I can talk the price down more by saying.... Well X, Y, and Z and not been done, so it will cost my X amount to get it done, so knock off X amount form the price and we are good.

He is asking 13,000 for it with 91k miles on it. KBB had the excellent value at just under 11k and NADA for just about 12k

I figure I could start with 11,500 and go form there....

It is not manditory to change the water pump. It is only recommended when the timing belt is changed because it is easy to get too at that time. The water pump may last for 200k miles. Make sure that the drive belts were all changed when the timing belt was changed though.

Ok, I will make sure to check for that as well.

Check Edmunds for pricing on a used truck. I don't know if you are looking at a 4runner or a Taco but 13K sounds high for 2000 4runner ($10.5K for retail, $9K private). I would start much lower than $11500. Is it having a lot of upgrades? If so are the worth paying so much extra?
Good luck

No ups to my knowledge. Ya, It is a bite high for the year and mileage, so I will try to get him to 11, 000 maybe.

Thanks for the help!

What you should do is print out the KBB webpage and stick the $11k price in the salesmans face. Point out that is for "excellent" condition then proceed to nit-pik the heck out of the 4Runner you want to buy to demote it to "good" condition. Then mention that since there is no evidence the timing belt has been replaced you are gonna half to fork out $500+ (highball 'em) immediately to get that done. Then he doesn't have much arguing room as to why you want to pay $10k (or whatever KBB quotes for a "good" condition 4Runner minus the $500 t-belt) for the 4Runner.

I somehow doubt you can call anything with 90K miles in excellent condition anyway. I agree negotiate as it being in good condition (what is the condition of brakes, tires, powersteering etc).
Start low and walk away if the sales guy doesn't budge, he will surely start lowering his price.

I plan on starting at 11,000. PS, it is from a private seller.

Going no more then 12,000, if that.

I plan on having KBB print out and NADA print out and plan on asking him about the 90k miles maintenance, timing belt, all fluid change, diff flush, etc, as well as plug and wires.

If I could just get a hold of the guy. Called him 3 times today with no luck.
