90-91 vs 92+ Gen2 4Runners
I'm starting to shop for my new 4Runner tomorrow.

Are there any reasons to buy a 1992 4Runner over a 1990-91?
They seem to be $2000 or so more. Besides the redesigned headlights/grille, is there anything that makes them more desireable or valuable?
I like the spare tire mounted on the back, so mounted underneath doesn't do anything extra for me.
Thanks

I'd say keey your $2000 in your pocket and get the older one.
Most importantly stay away from the automatic hubs, they work fine going forward but they unlock in reverse and no power gets to your front wheels. Look at the center caps of the front wheels. If it says 'automatic locking hub' or something similar, avoid it. The alternative is ADD, automatic differential disconnect, which works in forward and reverse.

From my experience in owning a '91, here is a list of additional differences:
These are minor differences and I think any of the 2nd Gens would serve you well. I'd be looking for low miles and rust free examples of any year.

problems with the '91
Personally I like the front end on the 90 and 91 better than the 92s and older, the grill is a little more distinctive. The lack of the 'T' symbol reminds me of a bygone era before corporate trademarks . . .
Anyways, be very careful when checking out the 91 model. I've owned one for nearly ten years and there are some things to be aware of.
1) Look for any evidence of overheating. Toyota issued a massive recall on the head gasket (too late for many owners).
2) Look for rust in the rear wheel wells, Toyota seemed to correct this problem by 1992.
3) The front brake calipers are smaller on the 91 than the 92, not really a problem but something to be aware of.
4) I think they stopped putting the rear spare gate on the 92 model as well. (too bad, I love the look of a spare on the rear)
Here's a link to the recalls for the 1991 V6 4Runner

Best of luck, even with all the problems, I would much rather own a 91 just because its a little more unique and less likely to be seen as a grocery-go-getter.
