87' 22R starting problems
I've got a 2wd pickup here that is not wanting to start. It attempts to fire but nothing to turn it over completely. It is getting plenty of gas and spark, just don't know the next step to move onto.
Cold Start injector?
Air valve stuck open?
I'd appreciate some help, thanks.

how do you know it is getting gas and spark? most people jsut assume it is without having any testing done.... did it jsut never run @ all? or all of a sudden stopped or what? my timing was recently running around 50* advanced, and my truck still ran... it ran liek crap and was a pain to start, but eventually i figured it out and it starts a lot easier now

It's a 22r.
I've checked for spark and have a good one. I'm getting plenty of gas, carb is moist and sure smells like it.
It ran fine for awhile but after not driving it for a little while it is hard to start. I now also get hesitation when I accelerate quickly. kind of a bog, chug chug chug and then goes. Timing is my next bet but I just have so little time to ever work on anything.

yeah already did a complete tune up. Adjusted the timing way done low and then up and both didn't help. Just keeps havin trouble starting. Could it be the carb? My mechanic suggested that the carb may be a turd and said a weber could solve the prob.

well here is one... how did you check timing? with a light or actually open up the motor and set the crank to o degrees and make sure the cam peg is straight up... my truck jumped 3 cam teeth recently and would barely start, then ran like crap, i couldnt give it over half throttle or it would sputter like mad....... while all this was happening the timing on the outside with a light appeared normal....

Spray some carburetor cleaner in the carburetor or just pour some gas in it. If it starts for a short time then you have carburetor problems. I know you said that the carburetor seems to be working, but it is a quick test. If it does not start after doing that then check your compression.

I've done all the normal gas, fuel, spark, timing, maintenance checks. We've moved the timing way up and then way down. No we haven't opened the motor to check the crank. I'm starting to think this $600 truck wasn't worth it. The timing chain is starting to get loose and can hear it tapping the cover in there (this is all ofter the starting porblems). I just checked with local shops to get an idea of what it would cost to pay somebody. They were giving me quotes of like $800!!! Anyway, still having that starting problem and waiting for that individual that had the same problem as me to read this thread and give me the fix!

Sounds like your timing chain probably jumped a few teeth. If you can do it yourself then you will save a lot of money. The chain kit with the guides and everything else is about $200-$300.

all of the sudden getting over heating and extreme coolant loss. I'm guessing blown head gasket. Where is a good rebuild kit or someone that sells rebuilds? I can buy one locally for (complete rebuild) $900 with a yr warranty.
