'85 4Runner rear window issues...find that relay!
Like pretty much anybody else that has ever owned a 4Runner, my rear window is acting up. Once a long time back the console switch had gotten dirty enough it wasn't making good contact and a quick disassembly and cleaning of the junk in it and the contacts set it right.
Recently, it had not been opening on occasion from the console or the tailgate switch, but by pressing on the top left corner of the tailgate and using the keyed switch in the tailgate I could get it working. Now, that isn't working and the only way to get the tailgate window to work at all is to pull the console switch, turn the ignition and use a jump wire on the contacts. When I do, I seem to hear all the necessary relays fire up and the window raises and lowers fine. What I can't seem to get, is any current through the blue center wire in the console switch.
Checking the wiring diagram I get the impression that the switch that
detects if the tailgate is closed is at fault. My question is, where is that
switch/relay and is it something that can be adjusted? I get the impression
from being able to activate it in the past by pushing on the tailgate that is
may now be in a position such that it cannot detect that the gate is closed.
I've never had the top off so the bolts that activate the relay checking for
the top should be fine.
Any info would be appreciated.

well this sounds kinda like what Im going threw. I installed a new switch upfront, still didnt help, my rear switch never has worked. Mine will work like when I park but then when I get back in the vehical it wont work. So Im gonna try just wiring it directly tot he battery so it will always have power. I did not know about a switch that senced if the window was up or down, ill have to look for it.

The rear window is controlled by a whole series of switches and relays detecting whether or not the tailgate is open, the top is on, the rear wiper is parked, Jupiter is aligned with Mars...
Most likely, it is one of the relays either burned out or simply not detecting what it is supposed to due to dirt or being out of place. Here is a link to a webpage full of ideas and a wiring diagram to give you some ideas

Unfortunately, what it doesn't list is the exact location of the relay I am looking for which I think is the door lock detection switch. Hopefully, it is just in the tailgate and dirty or out of adjustment.
