I got a 84 with a 22R (domed pistons) and it seems the timing chain broke. Anyone know if it could of really messed up the insides?? Don't sound like it when I crank it over. I know the 85 and later 22re's are non interferance engines. Right?

 

Yes, it is interference, all R series engines are. For that matter, all Toyota engines with a chain are interference, most with a belt are non-interference. Better pull the head to be sure but you could just check the valve gap as well. Any gap over spec may indicate a bent valve.

 

The 3rz-fe 4cy has a chain and is non interference

I've never been in to an engine before.
Messed with Carbs and swapped trannies, installed flywheels & clutches and everything else in an automobile but never an engine. Anywayz...Read up on it and tore in to it. I've removed the valve cover and verified the timing chain did in fact break so all I did was get it all ready to strip down. My plan is to do as you suggest and remove the head. This will allow me (as you mentioned) to check the gap and roll each cyl. to TDC and clean the top of the pistons if needed. The ? I have is...Minus the valves (if needed) what all should I replace/order when buying the parts for the timing chain??

Gaskets??
what else??
any advice on non related parts to check whilst it's all torn down??

i'd go with engnbldr's parts. very inexpensive and good quality -- i have the same parts in my engine, though i didn't buy through him(but my guess is that my machine shop who ordered the parts might have...)

if your timing chain broke, there's a good chance that at least a few of your valves might be bent, and pistons have some damage. fortunately these engines are pretty easy to rebuild. the only expense other than a master kit/possible machine work is that you're probably going to need new valves now. i think they're around $50 for a set...you could go oversize and have a machine shop install them while you're at it as well
