95.5 tacos too. At least my friend had the HG on his 95.5 taco replaced through the recall - only to have it fail again after he sold the truck to another friend.

Just attempting to build a database of blown head gaskets for the 3.4 5VZ V-6 engine. Please copy and paste this questionnaire into your reply post.

Year of your Rig: 1997

Rig Type (Taco or Runner or T100): 4Runner

Has your Head Gasket failed?: YES

Mileage at HG failure: ~210K (194k on Odometer but I've had larger tires on since 70K miles - so odometer is reading less miles)

Cylinder of HG Failure (if known): 6

Did your engine overheat prior to HG Failure?: Not prior - but started to leak coolant and get hot... was a symptom of it happening. So was rough idle at cold start... then finally white smoke for a few minutes after cold start.

Was the Head Gasket Recall work done on your rig prior to HG failure?: NO. Didn't qualify even though my build was 12/96

When I checked, the heads were flat as could be, no machining neccesary, all valve clearances were within specs. I used Felpro MLS gaskets and have used it for towing this summer, so far,so good. If you are tore down this far, do yourself a favor and replace the starter contacts.
