in the near future i am planning on buying gears for my 4runner, and Ive heard that 5.71's are weaker than 5.29's, Ive also heard that 5.71's have a smaller pinion, and from another source that they have the same, 7, so if they both have 7 teeth, then the ring must have the different teeth count, i would go with 5.29's because thats what all of my wheeling buddies have in their trucks with 36's, but i would like a slightly lower 1st low ratio, i don't do much rock wheeling, so twin t-case, is not really for me, i would like anyone with experience running these gears to chime in, and if I'm not too clear in my writing above, my question is, are 5.71's weaker than 5.29's

5.29's are pretty much the limit when it comes to regearing, the 5.71's are going to be wandering into the realm where the teeth on the gear become too small and will tend to snap. Go with 5.29's if you must go super low...

 

Sure would suck to have those 5.71 break then you would end up opening up them pumpkins again. Do it right the first time, go 5.29

 

On mine with the 5:29s and 35s my speedo is a bit high - it reads 70 at 65 roughly. (I've actually timed a few dozen mileposts and it's just under 8% high.) I wouldn't want 5:71s and 36s, it would wind the motor too tight for good driveability.


By the way, not to hijack your thread but this is related - I"ve run 3 tankfulls through now that I've done the 5:29s (35s) and the mileage improved wonderfully, about 2 mpg better than before with 4.10 (and 35s ugh). Correcting for the odo error (8%) I averaged 19.6 for the last 3 tanks. That's about 50/50 hiway/town driving. For the record day in day out with my 22re, both when it was stock and with 4:88s/33s, I got 18.2 to 19.0 year after year, with 22+ on highway trips. The 3.0 may not be a hotrod, but that's pretty darn decent mileage for a rig like this. (And just to add cred - I've driven the same route every day for years, and my F150 got 15ish, and it did use more fuel per week than the Toyota has so far, so that provides further reason to believe the numbers are about right.)

 

I see you got 5spd. I'd go with 5.29. I'm running that with 35's and with 36 or 37 would be fine.

 

if you want a bit lower 1st gear ratio, go with the 5.29 then perhaps get some of these
