4wheel drive not engaging

Hi,
Feels like a dumb nuwbie question, but I need help.

My 4wheel drive does not engage.
I first noticed that it the 4wd was not engaging earlier this fall when I was winterizing my rig.
When I pull the lever into what should be 4hi, the 4wd light does not come on. I have also tried 4lo. Again, nothing.
I have tried several timing since, to get the light to come on, but nothing.
I thought the light may just be burnt out, but that was not the case. 4wheel drive doesnt seem to want to engage.

This week, we had our first snow fall, and my wife happened to be using my ride, slipping and sliding. We are waiting for our new ride to arrive, but it is a rwd, therefore, my wife will prob be driving the 4rnr this winter. I would like for her to be safe.

Where should I start with my trouble shooting?
I have tried to search, but dont seem to be very good at it. If there are threads out there, can you please let me know where?

My ride is:
98 4rnr
V6 SR5 auto.

thanks
tdk

i belive the 3rd gens use the sam ADD type front axle design as the older second gens....

in which case the likely cause is the vacume hose fell off the actuator. or a connector is loose.
