4WD Problems
Sorry for the ignorance ladies and gents, but again this is my first 4WD ever and only had it since last October and maybe used 4WD 3X. 
First and foremost, this is a 2002 SR5 4WD. How soon should 4WD kick in when you initiate it? Its seems lately that I have to drive more than 50 - 150ft before it kicks in. Last night I put it in 4WD, accelerated to about 25-30 mph and let off the gas, then it kicked into 4WD. Then stopped completely and hit the 4WD button to take it back to 2WD, accelerated to about 25-30 mph and let off the gas, then it kicked into 2WD. Is this the correct process??? So far as I know that's what my manual said when I
it, but REVERSE was also an option. How do you guys engage 4WD and disengage it?
Last night, during all this shifting of 2WD to 4WD and vice versa, when shifting from 2WD to 4WD I heard a loud clicking noise or a snapping noise when I pushed the 4WD button. AND, when I started to drive I forgot that my emergency brake was on before moving :pat:, then I released the emergency brake and it was then that I felt this squeezing and the rig felt like it seemed that one of the rear wheels or both were trying to fight going into 4WD, as if there was some rubbing or something. Who knows, I might have been dreaming this up
. Is this normal?? Maybe I'm freaking out 
. I really haven't paid that much attention until last night when I heard me shifting with the windows down.
I tell you what all this is making me sick

What year and is it a SR5 or Limited?
On my 2K SR5 in 4 hi you just pull it into 4wd at any speed I think up to 50 mph and it engages. Same to disengage, just pull it out of 4wd. In 4 low you have to come to a stop.

Seems odd to me man, but they may have changed the way it works for the newer system.
My '97 changes into 4-hi within a few seconds. Usually within 10 feet I guess. Back out from 4-hi to 2-hi is the same way.

First of all - relax. You bought a Toyota; it won't break that easy
It is normal for the newer (2001+) systems to take a little longer to shift from 2wd to 4wd and vice versa. It all depends on whether you are accelerating and what the transmission is doing (i.e. shifting gears).
Here is a little trick that works for me, after you engage 4wd (or disengage) tap the breaks and it will shift right away.
It is normal to here a loud click when switching in and out of 4wd. Remember, you are engaging the front driveshaft.
As for the binding, you are not pressing the center differential button are you? This is the button to the left of the steering wheel. You should only see 4 green tires/wheels on the dash; if you see an orange circle you are pressing the center diff. You only want to use this in low traction settings and not for the road. I am assuming by your description that you weren't rock crawling, right
?

. That'ts the only way she let me buy it...otherwise I would be switching vehicles every 3 years.

My 2002 sport edition 4wd does the exact same thing......it takes a little bit for it to engage and disengage...but the tap on the brakes trick works like a charm on mine...as soon as i do that...it changes over and life is good.........
