4wd not working

I'm looking at a 1995 4Runner SR5. It's a V-6 with 113,000 miles. The dealer says that when he traded for it the 4wd worked. However now it doesn't. When I shift it into 4wd I don't feel any resistance in the lever, nor does the 4wd light come on. I've old posts on the site and it looks like it could be anything from a vacuum line to some sort of electrical failure.
I have an '82 4wd truck but it's all mechanical. I'm not even sure how the 4wd works on these 4Runner's.
I want to pursue the vehicle as the guy only wants $4600 for it and it's in immaculate condition.
Thanks in advance for the help!!

If it's an auto there isn't any resistance in the lever or at least very little.

My light doesn't come on until I actually move...then it stays on. Wierd eh?

Did you try to drive it? You can feel it if it's engaged.

Yeah, I tried driving it last night. It's definately not engaging. I checked the vacuum lines on the right side of the engine compartment, all seem to be intact. With my limited knowledge of the truck I think I'll stay away and just keep running my old '82. Thanks guys for the help.

Check the Air canister. It is located near the front bumper in the passenger side wheel well.

There are two vacum lines going to it. pull them off and stick a small nail or pin into the opening's in the canister. (Mines gotten clogged a few times)

If that doesn't fix it start tracing the lines from there.

I had the same problem with my V6 and was the Solenoid Vacumm Valve that activate the ADD; ($25 in the Junkyard and $240 in the dealer) I found a complete diagnostics instruccions that help me to find the offending part in the Haynes manual and I only used a cheap electric tester.
If you need more information let me know.
