Angry 4WD Kickout?

We recieved about 6 inches of snow saturday night so I couldn't get out of my dirt driveway without engaging 4WD. Everything was working fine until a couple of blocks later when I noticed that the differential shift lever had kicked itself back into 2H by itself, and the light on the dash had gone out.

When I got to the next light, I put it back into 4H, the light came back on, and when the stoplight turned green I had 4WD again, but only for a couple of more blocks.

Is the differential shot?

Could it be the A.D.D.?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the vacuum lines under there. There should be three (?) that all should be connected to the diff housing. One of the lines could be off or be damaged.

I'm thinking it might have something to do with the body lift?

Craig.

Good idea Craig! Besides, with that much clearance under there, it should be easy to check those lines out.

Yes, check the clearance around the t-case shifters. Not uncommon for a body lift to put some pull on the shift levers. I had this exact issue on my '85 with a 1" body lift. A little trimming around the shifter boot plate was all that was needed:

The ADD cannot kick the shift lever. I had this problem with my 3" BL (hard to get into 4hi, wouldn't stay, and no possible way to get it into 4lo) and solved it by getting Marlin Crawlers short throw conversion. You could solve it by simply bending the lever by the way...

i had the similar problem but mine was kicking into 4wd, and over here in cali it doesnt snow much so i didnt need it,

i went to my mechanic/friend, told it was the locking hubs, so i removed the AISIN hubs and put some premium WARNS but according to some people tha'ts sucha good idea. but when i talk to mechanics say WARNS are more stronger and better. than AISIN and then when i talk to regular non mechanics they tell me the opposite
