Hey all Im pretty new to the site and just want to say that there is some gret info here. I recently bought a 97 4runner sr5 . The only mods ive made are the elbow mod and intake silencer removal. when i bought the car i wasnt interested in off roading ive had sports cars all my life but needed something bigger, well im kicking my self now im really wanting to get off road in this thing now that i have it but the problem is i bought a 2wd what all would be involved in converting this ride into a 4wd ? is it worth it or should i wait and just get a 4wd . I appreciate any input . I would also like to lift it some but i see no point in lifting a 2wd truck, is this just me or is that pretty much the general oppinion?

 

Converting 2WD into 4WD might cost you more than what's the entire 4Runner is worth, so normally it is much easier and cheaper to sell the current 4Runner and buy 4WD model.

As far as wheeling, 2WD is pretty capable too if you're not into hardcore offroading. Many folks here wheel in 2WD pretty successfuly. Try it for yourself and see what you think, after all you have 4Runner and not some cheesy "want to be SUV"!

Yeah...Andrey is right in saying that you are better off financially to just trade that rig in for a 4WD.

He is also correct in saying that 2WD 4Runners are very capable off-road. I would advise you do go with someone who has 4WD in the event you get stuck...I mean you won't be able to do anything SERIOUS but you can still have some fun in the mud!

I had a 2wd 4runner for a while and I took her some very cool places..and thought it was great for a 2wd..places a 2wd shouldn't really go without recovery gear...but when I realized I wanted a 4wd..I thought for a little while about a conversion...and dropped the idea about a day later...
so I bought me a 10 year newer 4runner in 4wd..and I am happy as can be.

A guy from www.tacomaterritory.com just did a 4wd conversion on his Prerunner Tacoma. I guess the cost just comes down on how many of the parts you can get used. Your best bet would be to find someone who did a solid axle swap and get their IFS parts their not going to use.

I'm in the same boat as you. After considering my runner for so long, I deceided to go for a 2wd. Unfortuantely for me I spend to much time in this joint, and have been hooked with all these 4wd stories. So since I've spent so much on my rig, I'm stuck with 2wd. No biggy, maybe in 10-15 yrs I'll get a 4wd runner.
