4runner's a liar
Ok well I've had my 4runner for like 2-3 months and I realized my 4x4 doesn't work at all the cables work the axle moves and the 4wd indicater lock goes on but still when I roll up on a rock nothing my back tire jus spins what is goin on? Its on an 85 runner

4 wheel drive is not truly 4 wheel drive. It's the right rear wheel and the left front wheel that are truly engaged. If someone put lockers in the truck then it would really be 4 wheel drive. Which wheel is spinning when you pull up to a rock? You need to give up more details.

Mark, that is good information for us 3rd Gen guys but in his post he says he has an '85. I am not sure this guy knows anything based on his comments, so if he does have an '85 he probably does not know he needs to lock the hubs to have 4WD. Just a guess...

Never seen any cables on my '85 nor any boots on the axle. 4WD light is turned on by a switch in the transfer case. So with 4WD light on, does the front driveshaft turn? If so, shift into 2H and then lock the front hubs (turn the dial pointer from Free to Lock) and see if the front driveshaft turns when you move the truck or if stopped that you can't turn the front shaft by hand. If both the above two tests are positive, then you likely do have functional 4WD.
If you have auto hubs instead of manual hubs, then they may not be working properly:
