4Runner Fender Flare Removal?

4Runner Fender Flare Removal?
Been looking at 01 & 02 4Runners and they all have the larger painted fender flares. I happen to prefer the smaller black ones or chrome lip style. Does anyone know if I tried to remove them would I be facing drilled holes in the body or other obstacles. Would trying this be not advisable? I found an old thread on this but the pictures didn't show up.Thanks.

Research "limited fender flare removal"
If you take them off, you will be left with a bunch of square holes. Not very pretty. And not ALL 01-02's came with them, but a lot did.
