4 RUNNER REAR END QUESTIONS...other posts i found in searches leave me with questions
I am sorry to post but did a search and red many posts, I want to figure out recommendations, and what rear I have
The truck is a 1997 3.4 liter 5 speed SR5 4 Runner
as far as I can tell, it is likely I have 4:10s
the codes in the door jamb is as follows VZN185L, which seems to be 4:10's according to other sites
The other axle code I found is A03A, again seems to denote 4:10's
is this rearend an 8.4 inch or something else? is this the only ring gear diameter offered in these years?
Also what do you recommend for a locker? I was thinking of a powertrax or something? I will likely do the front and rear units at the same time, and just need something for light offroading and for the snow
Thanks in advance
Tim, Boston Ma

Verify your gear ratio hunch by marking the drive shaft at the 3rd member, jacking it up off the ground from the diff, and spinning the tire two full revolutions. Count the number of turns. And yes, you can tell the difference between 3.90's and 4.10's and 4.10's and 4.30's. At least I could.
As for the locker, I recommend swapping an entire e-locked rear axle if you can find a donor, otherwise ARB seems to be the weapon of choice around these parts. Are you planning on doing a gear ratio change at the same time?

I am familair with the driveshaft rotation method, thanks on that though
no i dont plan on swapping gears, just want to do a simple upgrade
were any SR5's offered with a limited slip differential of some type from the factory? or is the e locker that is found on Limiteds the only type of posi/lsd offered?
also will a factory toyota LSD, if they do indeed exist....are they like a GM posi in that rotating one wheel forward cause the other wheel forward? ( in nuetral with the wheels off the ground )
or do they spin in opposite directions if checked in this method, then they simply lock up under a load
thanks for your thoughts on this

All 3rd gens have an 8" rear diff and a 7.5" reverse rotation front diff.
To my knowledge there were not any factory LSD's offered.
If you are looking for an LSD I would suggest a Detroit Truetrac.

what do you make of this site, is this for older toyotas?
does the '3' at the end of a 4 digit axle code denote an LSD for earlier toyotas that is?
