4:88's and 33's a good conbo?

I will try the 4.88's in the rear and see how I like it. If that's not great then 5.29's will be in the future, I pray the 4.88's will solve my woes. Thank you for all the input.

4.88's were purchased earlier today and should arrive in a week, I will then have them swapped in and post my results.
Step 1. order 4.88's
Step 2. Steal underpants
Step 3. swap rear gears 1st (please keep in mind I have manual hubs and will not suffer any ill effects unless by my own hand with two ratio's on board).
Step 4. record data for rpm's, fuel, driving style, chicken bone readings, etc.
Step 5. sell 4.56 setup and keep 4.88 or buy 5.29 and start over.
Step 6. take over the world.

Aaron swapped in the 4.56s.
BTW Scotty, it makes sense you have 4.30s. I remember you thought you had 4.56s stock b/c of what the axle code said...I knew that was not correct. Just goes to show you how Toyota really screwed up labeling gear codes.

Heres a question, while some of the rear 3rds are swapable from taco to 4runner are the front 3rds the same? I don't see any difference visually but just figured I'd ask prior to pulling everything apart and saying oh shnowzer.

The front 3rds are the same. Even the A.D.D. (auto hubs) and non-A.D.D. (manual hubs) versions take the same reverse-cut gears. You shouldn't need the master install kits since your bearings are still pretty new.

4.88's arrived a few days ago, dropped it off to BLUEYFAB (Winter Springs,FL) for Scott to setup for a nominal fee (super awesome price). The 4runner sits lonely win no gears and is depressed. The rear 3rd should be done tomorrow evening and will start it's testing phase on Thursday.

I got lay's stax can lids sitting where my cv's should go, and i'll be taking a 1k road trip this thursday-sunday with no front driveline or skids. This is the lightest my trucks been in a while.

Well theres a delay, the solid spacer that I asked the shop to use in place of a crush sleeve is 2 days out and I won't see a complete 3rd until Thurs. PM. Damn this delays the testing process for certain. I will be running my standard gear (manual hubs) for the next 2wk or less until either I hate 4.88's or love them and have the front done as well.

Been installed for a few hours did a lap around the neighborhood, notice more pep and likelihood of turning the 295's over on dry pavement. Tomorrow I will hit highway speeds for a few hours and compare RPM'S to see where I'm at also a tank or two through the runner should help the evaluation.

Just a word of advice, normally you don't want to drive more than 20-30 miles at a time without letting the new gears cool down for about a 1/2 hour. They won't make as good of a "footprint" on eachother if they get too hot while settling. Hope the 4.88s work out for you!

Yeah I've heard that but what happens when you buy a brand new car? Good write up

thought this begs the question how the hell do you break in a front R&P, as you cannot drive 500 mile locked up?

I wondered this since the last time I re-geared. Not to mention the front (mine anyway) when engaged is locked causing even greater stress but then again it's slow going never fast so perhaps that makes up for something. I don't drive the crap out of my truck like some.
