How hard would it be to remove the 3.0 and replace it with the 2.7. I mean the peak hp is at the same point and it gets 3 ft/lbs less of torque (although it peaks 600 rpm higher). Most of all it'd be a lot easier to turbocharge than a V6 is and then it would easily spank the 3.slow. Anyone done this, looked into doing this? How hard would the wiring be, thats my biggest fear. Thanks for your help in advance.

well, I can't say for sure, but you'd probably need the tranny that mates with the 2.7. Along with the computor. It could be done, but you'd also have to make various brackets to mount the engine to your 4runner.

So in the 3rd gens there are different 5spds for the 4 and 6? If not it shouldn't be hard because a few people have already done the 5vz swap, btw anyone have a link to that swap?

I just read on yota tech here that you can reuse the bell housing and clutch from the 2.7 to bolt up a 22re manual tranny to a 2.7 motor.

I, it looks like anyways, am 1 of possibly three people who had the same idea and are trying to track down information on this swap.

The numbers are what intrigued me. then the motor. solid and efficient. somewhere in the mid 20's mpg wise.

there are plenty of write ups on other forums if you google you will find them. i read a few that state it is a "very easy swap". i assume that would be for manual to manual trannys. i think the 3.0 came with an R151F (or 150) tranny, which i believe has the same bolt pattern as the 4 banger W56, but 1st and 2nd gears are slightly higher and the unit is about twice as burley (nice upgrade).

i'll be putting in an R151F tanny in the 4runner this summer, which leaves me open to upgrade my 22RE to the 3RZ at some later date. I love the 3RZ in my taco, i might just use that one, and upgrade my taco to an import yota diesel.

Marlin Crawler makes an bellhousing that adapts the newer engines to the older trannys, which they state are much better and stronger than the newer trannys.

I've got a 1994 4Runner with the 5 speed, and the 3.0. I've raced a buddy of mine in his 2003 tacoma with the 2.7(i think its an '03) and won. Save your self the time/money/frustration and stick with the good ol 3.slow. But thats just me. The turbo sounds pretty good, maybe I'll look in to that someday, too.

If you already have the 3.0 Runner, then the 3.4 would be a more straightforward swap. Mechanically, it is pretty much a bolt on conversion - same motor mounts, same transmission bolt pattern, same position in the engine bay, etc.

There is also a lot of aftermarket support for the 3.4. BTW, I get about 18-19 mpg from my truck with the 3.4 in it - far better than the 14-15 I got with the 3.0!
