Which 3rd housing is this???

It's got 4 fins on the side, and it has this funky connector on the top. The wire is cut and I don't know what it was to. My Chilton's manual doesn't have any info on it.

no numbers on the flange near the nuts? all the toyota ones I've seen have had at least the first 5 digits and then a few others that make it possible to get on a website and find which one it is.

a 3.0 V6 3rd maybe, not a 3.4. the 3.4's don't have any connectors.

Yeah it's a V6, it's my truck. I just don't believe it's the stock housing. It has a Toyota 4.88 gearset if that helps. I'll go check to see if there are any numbers.

Okay, on one side of that adapter it says "2 4 2" On the other side there's "2" then what looks like a little "AT" or "AN". But the two letters are incredibly hard to distinguish.

I'm not trying to get rid of it! I just figured while I'm borrowing my boss's digital camera, I'd see if anyone knew what this was.

The connector is the ABS sensor. Look in the door jamb for the gear designation. Code G144 = 4.88's (31's and an auto). If your truck had the factory 31's and a 5 speed then they are 4.56's

if it came with 4.88's stock its definitely a v6 3rd, because the 4cyl 3rd never came with that in the US, the reason why i say that no one wants it is because it wont accept any other gear sets, because of a different carrier

My question was because I searched around back when I had to replace my ring gear. All the pictures of 3rd gen housings... none of them had that connector. And my manual shows the ABS sensors as being on each side of the axle where the wheels are.

I've got 4.88's, V6, Manual transmission, and no ABS. Heck I don't have anything special, no ABS, no tach, it's completely void of creature comforts.

Ok, so now I'm confused... I figured my ring gear was stock because it had "Toyota 4.88" stamped on it. Heck I still have the gear, kept it as a paperweight . But the gear is the thickness of the precision gear. And the housing... it doesn't look like either of those... I'll go back out in the dark and look again.

Okay, so no "web" like that housing with the ABS sensor. Here's a couple pics. Sorry but it's a little dark outside and I was crawling in the gravel. I used a headlamp and the flash.

Oh, and the top fin in the pictures you posted show it sticking out from the regular "slope" of the differential. At least it looks like you could put your finger underneath that fin. Mine doesn't stick out like that.

yours probably is just a newer style casting, did your truck come stock with 4.88 or did you re gear them to 4.88, I'm not sure if i understood you correctly

I thought it was stock... but I didn't buy the truck new, and the previous owner put a detroit locker in the rear. So I have no idea.
