3rd Gen Scion Swap, specifically 2002

I have only found one write up on the Scion head unit swap and it was for a 98. Has anyone done this on a newer 3rd gen such as an 01 or 02? From what I have read you just pull out the old one and put in the new on the 4th gen but I have found very little on the difficulty of a 3rd gen. I am not very technically inclined and want to make sure I know what I am getting into. Thanks in advance for any tips or pictures!

I tried this on my 2000 because I wanted the 6 disc in-dash. It will almost fit. You need the brackets off of your stock stereo which will bolt right up on the Scion head unit. The only problem is the trim on the head unit is a little too big. It needs to be trimmed down with a dremmel or something. I never got that far because I had problems with the unit. The 6 disc units are horribly unreliable. If they aren't babied they start having problems reading perfectly good cds and ejecting them. You can find a lot more information at scionlife.com.

I've read about 4th gen guys swapping theirs out for the Scion Unit. What's so special about this Scion Unit? Is it just the fact that it can hold 6 CDs in the dash or is it something else altogether that just blows away our current radio? Just curious.

Let me know if you end up doing this mod jvangun. I've got an '02 as well and was wondering if it's worth it.

One of the best things about the Scion HU is the MP3 capability. I would opt for the 6 CD changer with the MP3, but hearing from the Scion crowd, the 6-CD changers suck @$$.

In my opinion aftermarket unit such as Pioneer or Nakimachi fits very well and looks stock in our 3rd gen. I have Pioneer DEH-8600MP and it plays MP3, WMA and is compatible with iPod. Newer units also have bluetooth capability to work with phones and other devices.
