3rd Gen. runner intake kit questions/suggestions
I was looking at the K&N FIPK kit for my 97 runner and was wondering if its really worth all the money? Or has any one just replaced the fliter box w/ a K&N cone filter and does that make a difference. I read about just removing the elbow that goes into the fender but i dont think thats enough & has any one else tried any other brands for cone filters. appreciate the 2 cents

Bolo,
Welcome to Yotatech. Is that the sound of your wallet getting lighter?!?!?!
To save you the time and agony reading through the millions of threads on this topic, buy:
1) Amsoil air filter TS-115
2) Amsoil recharging fluid
Yes, its reusable.
I did a write up on the air elbow removal. Click on the link in my sig. Also, check out jalaber's website for the deckplate mod. He has a great write up there.
Also, check out the "Tech" Section as well as using the "search" feature.
Again, welcome.

I had installed the K&N FIPK on my 96 4Runner and wish I had not. First I found that it plain sucks as a filter. Hole one up to the Sun and you will be amazed at all the holes in it that are much larger then the dust particals you want a filter to filter out.
Also the FIPK tore a big hole in my inner fender wall where it mounts. I am extreamly upset about that. There have been reports from others saying the same thing.
Finally I dyno tested it and showed a loss of power on my truck. You can stop by my site and check it out if you want. I do not know of any dyno tests of the FIPK on a normally aspirated truck.
The best thing you can do is just remove the elbow and that is good for about 6 dyno proven HP and it is FREE. If you take your truck for stream crossings then you may want to do the deck plate mod instead.

I'm happy with mine, but I have to be honest and admit that it is not worth the money. Awfully expensive for something that you can build with a couple of well planned trips to the local Ace Hardware and local speed shop.
Although the K&N filter takes a bad rap from some, I have run them for many many years without a problem, but there are some things that you should consider with the K&N's. Since I run PJ1 filters on my bikes, I have learned that cotton gauze filters need some kind of wrap for heavy dust situations. I run a Pre-Charger on my 4Runner, but on the bikes, I just make a few wraps over the filter with panty hose (yes, the same panty hose you can get in the grocery store, ignore the funny looks...) and I have yet to get a dirty intake plenum. Also, EASY on the filter oil! It doesn't need to be dripping off to be effective.
I have NOT tried the other filters available for the 4Runner, so I could not be an objective judge or commentator on the Amsoil, TRD, etc., so I won't even go there.

2 words, DECKPLATE MOD. And yes there is a screen you can put there. And you would leave the cap off most of the time, you'd only cap it when going off-road.
