3rd gen rear end question

This is for 1999 4runner it has a 3.4, 4x4 and a 5speed. My rear end has been leaking by the end of the axel housing on the drivers side for a few years. I have gotten new seals put in but they give out in about 6 months. So the time has come for me to find a new rear end housing to fix this once and for all. Does it matter if I get a used housing from a 2x4 auto with a 2.7 or does it need to come out of a V6 runner with the same credentials as mine?

Depends on the size of the wheels/brakes. Most 2WD auto 4cyls have the smaller brakes/wheel. A lot of those didn't have ABS as well.

If the wheels and brakes are the same size, and the truck has ABS, then yes you can use it.

You don't need a new axle housing you just need to install the seal correctly and keep the diff breather vent clear, I find mine needs to be twisted every 6 months or it will plug up. I would also opt for OEM seals hear, if there is a groove in the sealing surface just relocate the seal by 1mm, the OEM seals have also been revised. I've changed these seals on 5 different trucks no issues once they figured out the vent was the issue..
