3rd gen rear axle swap

Hello

This is my first post on this great site and I would like to see if one of you 4runner gurus can confirm that what I am about to do will work.

I have a 99 4runner highlander w/ 4.10 gears and no locker. I have a good lead on a 2000 limited 4runner rear axle w/ e locker and 4.10 gears and would like to swap this into my rig. I have read everything I could about retro-fitting an e-locker into a non-locked truck, but I have not read anything about swapping the axle out from locked to an un-locked truck.

The price of the complete axle with locker seems to me to be very reasonable and I am thinking that this would be much easier to do than trying to retrofit the locker into my existing carrier. Can one of you 4runer gurus confirm that swap from a 2000 limited to a 99 will work? are the two axles the same width from tire to tire?

I would really hate to start tearing apart the rear of my truck to find that this swap will not work.

Thanks
Mark

I am so jealous right now. I want a locker so bad. As far as I know the axle swap should go without a hitch. I have been reading up on this as well. All you have to do is figure out the wiring & there are plenty of write ups on the web about that, check out Phong's Write up

Wow, old thread. I did a full axle swap in April of 2004. I swapped an E-locked axle from a '99 limited with 4.30's into my 2000 non-E-locked with 4.10's. The whole swap took about 3 hours, including changing axle seals on the donor axle.

are you SURE that the locked axle has 4.10's???

i have been under the impression that you only got the locker with 4.30's and you only got 4.30's with the locker - but maybe i'm wrong on that... kind of a special beast of it's own.

if the '00 has 4.30's, then you'll need to swap out the front diff as well so the ratios match when in 4WD.

I don't see why that swap would not work as long as your donor was from a 2000 4runner.
Wiring will be a bit of a pain but certainly can be done.

The other sites I have are:

E-locker scan be had with either 4.10 or 4.30. The only way to know for sure is to remove the third and count the ring gear teeth, 41 teeth is 4.10 and 43 teeth is 4.30. If it's a 4.30, just get the front diff and swap it also-if the front diff is gone then I have a 4.30 front diff I can sell you. I did this exact swap on mine. I found a 4Runner with 4.30 gears and an e-locker and bought the rearx axle and front diff and just swapped both over.

wait, now I am confused. without pulling the rear and counting teeth, I thought the 99/00 limited had 4.10 gears. I will get the code my door jamb and look, but I though i had 4.10's and didn't know thye were changed in 2000.

ahhh...

that's right... the limited's have 4.10's and optional e-locker. the highlander version of the SR5's that came with lockers have 4.30's. i don't think i've EVER seen a limited w/ 4.30's now that i think about it...

however, then ONLY way that i know of that you could get 4.30's is w/ the e-locker. also, FYI, the 4cyl 4WD 3rd Gen's came w/ 4.56's from the factory - Schaefer's did...

if it came with 4.30 you might have kept the s/c and not regeared
If I am not on my honeymoon, I want a ride in your truck with the 4.56's

depending on your skills, space, time, and the price of the rear locker, it MIGHT be cheaper or the same $$$ to throw and ARB rear locker and compressor in what you already have. Either way you will have $$ out of the pocket and down time.

best recent price that i've found on an arb locker: $679

best resent price that i've found on a USED arb locker w/ about 50 miles on it: $550 shipped

best recent price that i've found on an arb compressor: $199

best recent price that i've found on labor to install: $150 (with you dropping the third and reinstalling it)

add ~$100 to that if you get new toyota bearings/races to put in while the third is pulled and apart

There is a guy on TTORA in North Carolina selling an e-locker rear with precision 4.88's for $500 and a matching front diff with 4.88's for $200. That is a dang good deal.

yeah, but the pinion nut has walked on him twice (apparently not staked like it should be) and the rear needs to be set up again. there's also a small chip in one of the pinion teeth from the walking pinion.

it's still a good deal, but only if you want 4.88's and can get the third re-setup for cheap. also, if you're on the east coast, shipping will be a major expense.

i paid right at $80 to ship a front diff from Indianapolis to Knoxville, TN.

it was about $35 to ship a rear third from central North Carolina to Knoxville - only about 400 miles IIRC...

Cali to Indi would be $$$$$$$$$$$

Um, Andy I think you're talking about the guy on Yotatech, I believe this is a different guy-he's in North Carolina and the diffs have 35k miles on them out of a Tacoma.

If I didn't already have my gears, I would be all over that.

I called 4wheelparts (I know they aren't liked, but they are the only ones I can find that sell and install lockers) twice and asked about an arb for my 99 limited v6, and the first answer I got was "No, it won't fit." The second time I called, the guy said that it depends because toyota had different axle's during the 99-00 years, and he would have to look at the truck to determine if the locker would fit.

Is it possible that there is no selectable locker available for my truck (besides e-locker swap)? Or could it be that they don't know what they are talking about?
