3rd gen front speaker and sound system upgrade

I know there are alot of questions about factory speaker size and what upgrades are the best so I thought I would throw my :2cents: in. Alot of people have said the stock speaker size for the fronts are 5.25 but some have made 6.5's fit with trimming. I just bought a set of Pioneer TS-A1702C 6-1/2in Car Component Speakers
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-5lmjDWw...onent+Speakers

and I paid $46.00 shipped to me from a special Best Buy auction site that my wife's brother set us up on. I put them in today and come to find out, the stock front speakers are 6.5's so these bolted right in without any trimming. The tweeters even bolted right in using the stock bracket and fit under the factory trim piece. There isnt really anywhere to mount the crossovers that come with them but you can use some double sided tape and mount them directly to the speaker mounting pod. Everything fits perfect and its a huge difference in sound. I also already had a Pioneer Premier CD deck to match.
I also got an Infinity Basslink for $68. shipped. It didnt have the bass remote link but it had the mounting brackets and looks brand new. So for just over $100 I now have a kick ass system that sounds great and I didnt have to hack up my doors to make anything fit.

I just did a full system upgrade with Polk DB6501, 1000w amp, and new HU. I should do the write up for that, it was pretty easy actually.

Im glad I didnt buy 5.25" for the front like everyone said was the stock size. Im not even gonna worry about the rears seeing how the fronts and the basslink take up any and all slack. I think component speakers up front is the way to go

Did you use stock wiring or replace it? Just curious as to how much of a difference this would make.

I think it would make a big difference...I always upgrade my wiring when I install new speakers....

= It's only a couple bucks for a few feet of wire....

I used the stock wiring for the front speakers and left all the stock plug in's to make it look clean. The speakers will take up to 230w so I think if I was using an amp for them, I would upgrade the wiring. For now using just the stereo, i will use the stock wiring

Nice work . 6.5" speakers fit nicely in the fronts.

I've seen guys fit 6.5's in the rear, but IMO, the benefit is not worth the trouble. However, upgrading to 5.25's in the rear over the 4.25's is an improvement. It takes very little work to fit 5.25's in the rear.

Here's a few pics from my install I did a while back:

What are the sizes you can put in a 3rd Gen Tacoma?

I assume that the front door speaker is the same size but I could be wrong.

What about the rear speakers in a 3rd Gen Taco?

I ask this because I'm about to upgrade my Head Unit as well and I was thinking about a speaker upgrade too.

Here is the deal on Crutchfield.....

Thanks!

Crutchfield says it's 6.5 up front and 6.75 in the back if you have an extended cab if anyone else was wondering.

Dave,

Very nice upgrade. I can't wait to see it but can you please post pics of the Infinity Basslink because I am interested in seeing how you mounted yours. I have to agree that component speakers are the way to go. I am very happy with my audio setup, it's great and all but I am wanting more lower end thump. Not much, but a little bit. Thanks a bunch.

What size speakers fit in the 2002 Tacoma's?

I had my door panel off the other day and they looked like 5x7's or 6x9's

are the rears the same?

I have a set of four 6.5, I want to put in
