3rd gen aftermarket rear coils...

is there anyone using aftermarket coils in the rear of their 3rd gen without the use of the stock rubber cone?

seems like everything would be fine, just wanted to double check, i dont have to time to fool around and "test" things these days.

thanks.

RT,

I don't have any big rubber cone on mine, was this only on some vehicles? My 4runner came from Canada....

There were no rubber cones on the earlier 3rd gens, but I just recieved a recall 2 weeks ago. I went into the dealer and the cones were part of the recall.

I haven't done the recall on mine.....can you tell me what they replaced / added?
I know they do the bump stops but what about the coils themselves (same or replaced)?

They replace the springs, bump stops, and put the cones in.

Ryan,

One benefit to using the isolator cones is no metal-metal contact between the coil and the upper spring seat. A lot of people, inlcuding myself, experience rattling and squeaking because of the metal-metal contact when you don't use the cone. Another benefit is you gain 1/2"-3/4" lift with the cones installed in the rear.

I originally had the cones installed, but I wanted to lower the rear of the truck a bit so I took them out. At first, there were no unusual noises, but over time, squeaking and rattling developed. I eventually made some donuts out of some PVC Shower Pan Liner and put those on top of the coils to isolate the metal-metal contact. No more squeaks and rattles.

Hope this helps.
