Hey got a question that has been drivin me nuts. Im startin on my 97 4runner sas project. I was wantin to put in the 85 toyota 8 inch axle and convert over to the 4cyl gear drivin t case. Does anywhere make an adapter for this to the 3.4? and if so how much? also exhaust, any ideas? Thanks a ton!! CHris

 

umm i dont think u can use a toyota axel i think u need a D44??

 

The toy axle is narrower and you'll have to run spacers, which is not good if driven on the street. The other option is get a custom axle housing made up. As for running a gear driven T-case, your best option is adding a Marlin crawlbox, then it's easy to mate them.

 

on 3rd gen runners the diff is on the drivers side. The 79-95 toyotas had the diff on the passenger side. You will have to use a Dana 44 or something similar.

 

or go with custom diamond housing and use the toyota 8 inch front like Flygenstein did.

 

theres a 3rd gen with yota axle build up in pirate unde the toy buildups...cant remember what motor is in it though. AA and marlin have the adapters your looking for. X2 on adding the marlin box. IMO, if youre going through the trouble of switching diff sides, id go with something better/stronger/wider than the toy axle...like full width or an 80HP elocked setup...but thats just me and my sas dreams

 

Seems to me you might need to do a little more reading. If you were wanting/planning on using a Toy PU front or rear axle under your 3rd gen, you're way off .

Now from the research i have done, it looks like its gona be a lot easier to put a dana 44 up front. I know of a mid 80s wagoneer for cheap i am thinkin bout buying. Now the only problem i had with the dana setup was steering. I really like the highsteer that i have on my 91 sasd 4runner and would like to do the same. Ive seen people have pieced steering setups together, but is there a kit somewhere that i can buy? Ive got an ifs steering box and im gettin the steering shaft that i need. Thanks

 

all-pro offroad, marlin, and advanced adapters should be able to steer you in the right direction with all your questions. my brother sas'd a 1990 2wd pickup and all-pro provided more help than anyone. good luck!

 

You'll need to get some hi-steer arms, and get some "flat-top" knuckles to bolt the arms to. Once thats set, then you are able to get a tie-rod/draglink with the desired ends and attach to the IFS box.

Also, you'll need to rotate the knuckles about 4* depending on the height you want, so your caster is not screwed.

I think sky manufacturing, partsmikeparts.com and a few others have the tie-rod/draglink setup. Also maybe allprooffroad.com too.

5"? I though they were only 3" narrower? are you sure its 5"?

I know a lot of places make spacers to get the width corrected, but if it really is 5", 2.5" spacers would be a bit much

 

Well i got a hook up on a dana 44 so i guess im just gona go that route. Im starting on it saturday. Im hopin that i can get it all tourched off and the springs mounted up by next weekend. Also a dana 44 out of a mid 80s wagoneer, anyone know how much wider that is than the factory on the 3rd gen? Thanks

 

Stock Toyota Rear Axle on a 1996-2002 4Runner is 60.5" WMS to WMS. 1983-1991 Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer front Dana 44 axles are 61" WMS to WMS.

thanks. i also am thinkin about swapin the rear axle. I wana get a dana 60, does anyone know what i can get it out of that is around the same width? Also i wouldnt mind having a wider set of axles. Is there a dana 44 out of something that is a bit wider than stock that wouldnt involve cuttting it down to fit?
