3rd gen 1999 4runner rear bumper replacement..how to
Thought i would leave a note here on the replacement since it looks crazy at first glance.
This thread is barring any rusted bolts, bent brackets or alignment issues due to a serious hit.
****** i might also add that my tow package saved thousands in damage to the tailgate, glass and bumper when a forklift hit it. Seriously......it would have been a mess!
Tools required:
12mm socket, 10mm socket, 2 extensions, 3/8 ratchet, prybar.
Replacement parts: L/S bumper and rear bumper
China made from amazon.
State of repair: Az. Runner.....no rust and most bolts and nuts came out by hand. Love it!!
No penetrating oil needed
Time: 1.5 hrs.
Thoughts : hats off to Toyota for really making the rear bumper stout.....with almost 20 fasteners.
Tow package stays on as does the spare.
Quick tip....do not try and remove the whole bumper at one time
The left and right sides have hooks on the tire side.
Try and do all jack adjustments and bending back using the old components. Tow Hooks....forklift like i used.... lol
Step 1- pry off plastic step.....just pop it off
Step 2- work from one side to the middle.
The required fasteners are quite obvious
Step 3- after removal, the new aftermarket bumper might need some prying to get all the bolts in. I left 2 out because they were far off.
I will tack weld them later but overall....a good fit.

We were loading a truck and he backed up full speed and smashed my runner.
Luckily, he hit the corner of the tow package so it and the chasis absorbed the hit.
Both the L/S and the rear section were dented.
Without a tow package......it would have been lights out!!
