I have a 1989 Toyota 4Runner with the 3VZE 3.0 V6 and it has plenty of power but that wasn't always the case.

I added the following performance upgrades:

K&N Filter
Jacobs Coils & Wires
DOA 3mm Overboared Throttle Body
4.88 Gears Front & Rear

I had my gears done at Randy's Ring & Pinion here in Washington.

I warn you ahead a time they did a great job on the gears but are not customer friendly or cooperative.

I went in to there shop and asked for 4.56 gears which is what Toyota went to on their 90's and above with 31" tires.

They recommended 4.88 and told me that one of their employees had the same setup and it works great.

Not knowing I took their recommedation. The gears work great, I have plent of low end but my engine is always running over 3K rpms and I really don't need 1st gear anymore.

After getting the BBB involved I ended up getting my money back but I really wanted the 4.56 gears I originally wanted.

I like the BFG 31x10.5's on my 4Runner and have no plans to increase my tire size.

One very important note I discovered is Tire Manufactures fudge on their tire sizes. Go out an measure you're tires and you'll find 31's are not 31" but 29.5 to 30 inches. I'm sure that probably goes for 33's as well.

I think the 4.88 will be perfect for you vehicle and will keep your engine rpm's down as well.

If you know of any good gear places in Washington I'm interested in changing my 4.88's out for 4.56's

I hope this information helps.

hmm

i've got a few things like K&N fipk and flowmaster, and some nice wires and plugs and my 3.0 will flat out hall a$$ and i'm running 32's with stock gearing. i'm not seein the problem with mine but mines a new jasper 6cyl(replaced original at 205,000). which is the same engine so i don't understand you people's lack of power.

break in?

Did you say your engine is not "broken in" yet? If it is not I wouldn't be pushing it hard, 3500rpm for long periods is not wise while breaking in an engine. Your biggest problem is the gearing and at. Either regear$$ or swap smaller tires in. You can't do much about the auto trany short of swaping in a 5 spd, but they really do rob power. Good luck

i have a 3.0 on 33s with stock 4.10:1 gearing, i also have intake and exhaust which helped. but the thing is still slow. if you drive your truck alot and you can afford it then get 4.88s it will make a huge difference. man i wish mine came stock with 4.56 but hey im just living with it for now because its not really a daily driver
