I'm in the process of rebuilding a 3.0 engine,o/s valves, cams, port polish heads/intake manifold and bored out.
My question is for me to purchace headers and ship them up to Canada its about $875.00 just to much . Has anyone got rid of the crossover pipe and ran a exhaust pipe from each manifold and then joined down by the cat. Or is this just a waste of time. I guess you would call it a poor mans header.

 

I had the exact same thought yesterday. I started a thread yesterday regarding 3.0L headers and soon learned that the headers by themselves were not helpful unless the whole exhaust system is changed and enlarged.
I decided against buying the headers. I wonder if the cross-over pipe could be removed and the drivers side manifold be plugged off where the cross-over pipe attaches. The passenger side exhaust manifold would then have to be plumbed to route the exhaust down and around and re-join the pipe just forward of the Cat. I changed my engine last July and had all that apart but I can not remember if there is room, or if the cross-over pipe could be cut and then swiveled down. Your right - this would be a poor man's header !!! Surely somebody has tried this already.

I plan on studying this some more over the weekend - since yours is apart - you look too - maybe we can come up with a plan.
